'Clouds of Sils Maria' US release pushed back to April 10, 2015



• BlackFilm: Sundance Selects has announced that CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA, the stunning new film from Olivier Assayas (SUMMER HOURS, CARLOS) starring Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart and Chloë Grace Moretz, will open in New York and Los Angeles on April 10, with a national rollout to follow.
A multi-layered, richly observed meditation on acting, aging and female relationships, the film premiered in competition at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and was also featured at the Toronto and New York film festivals.

'Clouds of Sils Maria' director Olivier Assayas talks about Kristen in a new interview

"The clouds of Sils Maria" is an outstanding film about parallel worlds in show business: Director 'Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart and the spirits of the cinema.



Standard: You cast Kristen Stewart a superstar as Binoche’s assistant. The mere mention of her name triggers excitement on Twitter. Is that the game with the ups and downs of the current celebrity culture?

Olivier: I'm not on Twitter, I have drawn a limit to how far I'll penetrate to electronic in my life! But it is part of her character to do so. There is this mirror system between the two female characters, which I admit, although I think the reins. But every character in this film is set to a certain degree of itself. You can see in her the film star of Twilight, which plays an assistant of an actress. This is in fact a kind of joke about the celebrity culture, because Kristen is really at the heart of this.

Standard: The relationship between the two women is very complex, there are moments of self-righteousness and ignorance, but also great intimacy. How do you create these dynamics?

Olivier: I enjoy mixing different elements when I work on my films. I was not so much interested in the conflict, but at the voltage to a kind of rivalry. It was then less than a mutual rivalry and challenging. For Kristen the film opened a new space in a phase of their career where she also needed the space. European cinema has more freedom for Kristen. An elderly actress, who is by passed through many stages of a career, is a key for them. She, Juliette is expected to teach her something. Of course that was exciting for Juliette. But she also felt challenged, because Kristen is not simply a young actress. She is a powerful woman: very controlled and extremely accurate, as far as her body control.

That's an awesome news!!!! Le Prix Louis-Delluc, a French film award, honors every year since 1937 (on the second Thursday of December) the best French film released during the year. The jury is composed of 20 members: the president Gilles Jacob (former Cannes Film Festival president), film critics and people from the industry. :)

Can you tell us more about your next movie 'Queen Of The Desert' ?

In less than ten days, I will start the mixing. The filming and editing are completed and I should be able to put an end to the movie in the first days of december.
I don't know where or when it will be shown for the first time.

The cast is really impressive : Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Robert Pattinson...

They all really wanted to work with me. I was asked why I chose Pattinson. It's not a big part, and it matched perfectly. I needed an englishman who still looks like a schoolboy but which is very smart. He plays Lawrence of Arabia, but at the age of 22, on an archeological site. Kidman, who plays the main role is wondering what that kid has to do in a place like this, and an archeologist tells her that this kid has a PhD.
Pattinson is really good in that role. He is a smart man and the choice was quite natural.
