Harmony Korine confirms Rob for 'The Trap'. Shooting to start in January

Taking in over six times its budget at the worldwide box-office a few years ago, Spring Breakers, like most of Harmony Korine‘s films, was a love-it-or-hate-it experience, but regardless of how one felt, it certainly brought new attention to the director. For those interested about his career and thoughts on filmmaking, he recently sat down with Marc Maron for a 1.5-hour discussion.

In the conversation, Korine discussed the initial images that led to Spring Breakers, how he helped formulate James Franco‘s character, his current distaste for New York City (as well as his formative years there at NYU), and how Kids came about and Larry Clark discovering him. He also touched on his next feature The Trap, which we haven’t heard an update on since early this year. He confirmed the casting of Benicio Del Toro and Idris Elba (who are the two leads) as well as Robert Pattinson and Al Pacino, with production kicking off in January.

Set in the world of Miami music, it follows Del Toro’s character who gets locked up for a robbery involving Elba’s character and nearly 15 years later is back for revenge. Korine described it as “a complete sensory bombardment,” adding “the way I feel about storytelling now is that it’s more like liquid. It has to do more with energy.” He confirms there’s still a story to be told, saying it’s a “super propulsive, pretty highly violent revenge movie.

Check out the full conversation below as well as highlights from a 20th anniversary conversation about Kids at BAMCinematek with the cast and crew.

Put two of Hollywood’s coolest characters in a room together and sparks are bound to fly. That’s exactly what happened when we tasked rockstar/actress Juliette Lewis to have a 'deep and meaningful' with her friend Kristen Stewart, one of the few young actresses working successfully across Hollywood blockbusters, high fashion and cultish Indie movies today.

The results were predictably unpredictable with Lewis accusing Stewart, 20-years her junior of being ‘a scrapper’ and able to ‘throw a punch’, Stewart admitting she has ‘no rhythm’ but wishing she could ‘tear sh*t up on the dance floor’ and the pair discussing everything from the perils of social media, to telling autograph hunters to 'f-off' and maintaining true friends despite the pressures of fame.

Lewis calls comedian Amy Shumer her mentor, while Stewart describes meeting Patti Smith when she was in a ‘f**ked place’ emotionally and how the older musician’s advice has proved invaluable.

********

She also addresses those rumours about her bitchy resting face.

"The whole smiling thing is weird because I actually smile a lot. I literally want to be like, 'Dude, you would think I was cool if you got to know me'."

Juliette Lewis on Kristen Stewart:

"You’re the female James Dean…But actually you’re a little bit rougher. I think you’re a scrapper. I think you can throw a punch."

On social media:

"I’m not anti social media. I just haven’t decided to do it. The idea of addressing such a massive group… If I don’t know who I’m talking to it doesn’t make any fucking sense to me."

On feminism:

JL: "My mentor is Amy Schumer. She’s like ‘Girls need to quit saying sorry so much."
KS: "I apologise constantly, incessantly... There’s something so natural about saying yes I think with women there’s a natural inclination to want to satisfy people."

Jesse Eisenberg Talks About Kristen, American Ultra and the Woody Allen Project

CS: You’ve been in the play on Broadway for a while and I just saw the trailer for “American Ultra” so it’s fun to see you reuniting with Kristen after “Adventureland.”

Eisenberg: It’s quite a different tone.

CS: Was it just a coincidence that you ended up doing another movie together?

Eisenberg: Yeah, pretty coincidental, but we like each other. We work a similar way and have a similar sense of humor. She’s like Jason in that way, too. We like different things that are maybe a little heightened but try to kind of play it maybe realistically, which we did in this movie. And “American Ultra” too. It’s not comparable to this movie, but it’s very heightened but our acting was real.

CS: You’ve done a lot of dramas and comedies, so do you have a preference at this point or do you just try to vary it?

Eisenberg: No, anytime there’s a good character. Like “American Ultra” is a movie I never thought I would be in because it’s more violent than the stuff I’m usually comfortable with, but the character is so great. I thought that this character is as good as a character that would be in a kitchen sink drama, an independent drama. It’s a really well put-together role. No, good characters tend to transcend genre in a way that very few other jobs can do. The same guy who can do the special FX on “American Ultra” could probably never set foot on “The End of the Tour” just because he would have nothing to do–maybe little things but it would be boring–but my job can transcend that. If you’re creating a Metropolis world, it probably would be boring to paint out some billboard in “The End of the Tour.” My job is pretty much the same.

CS: Is it true you’re doing another movie with Woody Allen?

Eisenberg: Yeah that’s in August.

CS: How much do you know about those movie before you do them? You’ve worked with him before so there’s maybe less pressure.

Eisenberg: Yeah, they gave me the script for one day so I got to read it. This is like three months ago or so, so I read it for the day and then you show up. A little bit less pressure, exactly. I know what I’m in for, yeah.

American Ultra Promo Kristen Stewart And Jesse Eisenberg - MTV After Hours

Stoner Talk Show
The "American Ultra" stars think hands are like, so weird.

Man, aren’t hands, like…weird? We think so. The stars of “American Ultra,” Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg sure think so, too. We called the duo in to be the guests on our Stoner Talk Show (regular host Woody Harrelson was unavailable, so MTV News’ Josh Horowitz and his Unicorns On Fleek shirt graciously agreed to step in), and had a free-form conversation with them. Does Stewart think “Twilight” is a good movie to watch while high? Is celebrating 4/20 outdated or cool in a nostalgic sort of way? Are unicorns really on fleek? And again: fingers. SO WEIRD, RIGHT?

Check out the video for answers to all of life’s questions, both great and small.

“American Ultra” hits theaters August 21.

Stylist Tara Swennen talks Kristen Stewart and Chanel

In the summer of 2013, I went to Paris with Kristen Stewart to attend Haute Couture Fashion Week for the first time.

We went [as guests] of Chanel, and it was lovely. Kristen and I had been working together for several years at that point, so it was really more like a family vacation. We stayed at Le Meurice, across the street from the Jardin des Tuileries.

The trip was jam packed with dinners, drinks, and events.

Kristen and I went to two shows together: Zuhair Murad, which was small — only two rows — and Chanel, which was on a much grander scale.

That show was at the Grand Palais, and it was a sweltering 105 degrees, so everyone was sweating in their Chanel looks.
Kristen wore the classic tweed blazer, which we mixed up with some leather gloves and cut-offs. She got a LOT of attention.
This was before she starred in the Chanel campaigns; by the time we returned the following year, Kristen was the face of the brand.

Kristen Stewart: 'Personal Shopper' Update

Cineuropa: Arte France Cinéma will also be backing Personal Shopper by Olivier Assayas (see article). Announced at the Marché du Film at Cannes, this English-language project will star the young American actress Kristen Stewart (who won a Cesar for Best Supporting Actress this year for her role in Clouds of Sils Maria) and will be filmed in Paris at the end of this year. Produced by Charles Gillibert for CG Cinéma, the film will centre around a ghost story on the margins of the fashion world, borrowing from supernatural thriller codes and mixing spiritualism and omission to capture the fear and desire for ghosts, in an ultra-contemporary and materialistic world. Les Films du Losange will distribute the film in French theatres and MK2 will handle international sales.

May 15, 2015

YAY! Finally the official announcement of their reunion! This is SO exciting, and filming in Paris? Let me die!!!

Variety: Kristen Stewart is set to star in Olivier Assayas’s “Personal Shopper,” a Paris-set English-language ghost story taking place in the fashion underworld.

Assayas (“Clean,””Carlos”) previously directed Stewart in “Sils Maria” which world premiered in competition at Cannes and earned Stewart a best actress Cesar (France’s Oscar equivalent), becoming the first Cesar-winning American thesp ever.

Penned by Assayas,”Personal Shopper” brings back “Sils Maria”‘s team: Producer Charles Gillibert for CG Cinema, MK2 for international sales and Les Films du Losange.

Gillibert said “Personal Shopper” will feature some of same themes as “Sils Maria” and will also have a genre/fantasy dimension. Shooting will start in the last quarter of 2015 in Paris.
