New Rob Interview with Metro News

Far from "Twilight", British actor Robert Pattinson continues his journey in the world of auteur cinema. He's in Cannes to present two films: The road movie "The Rover", by the Australian Daviv Michôd, and "Maps to the stars", from the Canadian master David Cronenberg.

ROBERT, YOU ARE IN CANNES TO PRESENT NOT ONE, BUT TWO FILMS. IS IT A SIMPLE COINCIDENCE?
It is a nice surprise, although I admit that I really wanted "The Rover" in particular to be shown here. We actually let all the other festivals pass us by in the hope of being here. We put all of our hopes on Cannes because it is the most beautiful festival in the world. In particular for such a different film like this one.

AS IN 'MAPS TO THE STARS', IT IS A FILM WHICH WAS BUILT OUTSIDE OF THE HOLLYWOOD SYSTEM. IS IT AN INDICATOR OF THE DIRECTION YOU WANT YOUR CAREER TO GO IN AFTER TWILIGHT?
What guides me, is the desire to work with a director. I've realized that if I worked with the greatest in the world, there were chances that I'd be pleased with the result (laughs). That I would have very satisfactory work experiences. There are around twenty filmmakers with whom I want to work with and I've just started. The next ones? This year, Harmony Korine and Olivier Assayas. Then James Gray next January. We met, became friends. Then we waited to find the right project.

IN YOUR SHOES, A LOT OF YOUNG ACTORS WOULD TRY TO LAND THE ROLE OF A SUPERHERO, OR AT LEAST A ROLE IN A BIG FRANCHISE. HAVE YOU CONSIDERED IT?
I've never auditioned for this kind of film. And I'm not even sure I would even know how to play a superhero or If I have a place in this world (he thinks). It doesn't mean that I won't do a big studio film at some point though. Besides, I watch a lot of them. But I really struggle with the idea of being in that kind of setting, as an actor.

IN 'THE ROVER', YOU PLAY A SIMPLE-MINDED GUY, THAT WE DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT ASIDE THAT HE IS HIS BROTHER'S SCAPEGOAT. HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE ROLE?
On the first reading, I was hearing his voice in my head. The voice of a guy who speaks so low and softly because he's constantly told to shut up. (laughs). So much that every word that comes out of his mouth is a suffering. It was a lot of fun though even if after watching the first cut, some of my dialogue was completely inaudible!

YOU ARE ALSO PLAYING IN 'MAPS TO THE STARS' BY DAVID CRONENBERG. THE HOLLYWOOD THAT HE PORTRAYS IN THE FILM IS IT THE HOLLYWOOD THAT YOU KNOW?
I've always had a good time in Hollywood. Actually I like its dirty side, as long as I don't spend the whole year there, that I don't become a caricature as we can see in the film. Remaining an observer: and I honestly can tell you that there are a lot of weird people there.

DO YOU COME ACROSS THEM OFTEN?
All the time! Actually, maybe I've turned into one of them now..

DON'T TELL ME THAT YOU SELL YOUR CRAP ON THE INTERNET LIKE SOME YOUNG ACTORS IN THE FILM!
Ah.. If only I could do it... (laughs) Frankly, everyone in Hollywood is a little crazy. The actors are that way in essence, if we consider that we are asked to play the variety of human emotions, sometimes in the same film. I can assure you that you will have a hard time meeting people that are crazier than us! (laughs)
