Eclipse Soundtrack is #7 on "sounding off" top soundtracks and scores of 2010!

From scores to soundtracks, this year really did deliver from the fine-tuning of classical orchestrations to completely reinventing them to introducing new artists to reacquainting us with well-known ones. Some have become old friends, some continue to impress, and at the end of it all there is one word that seems to sum up music for film in 2010: electric....

7. TWILIGHT: ECLIPSE (SOUNDTRACK)This soundtrack introduced me to The Black Keys. I could stop there, but the soundtrack as a whole is another impressive mix of alternative artists you may have heard of, along with some new discoveries.

Over 400 songs competed for inclusion on “Eclipse” soundtrack

HollywoodNews.com discusses the upcoming article in Rolling Stone that takes a look at the selection process for bands/songs to make it onto the Eclipse soundtrack.

Though the June 10th issue of Rolling Stone Magazine doesn’t go so far as to review the soundtrack, it does go far in discussing the selection process and the fierce competition among fledgling bands to be included. With the soundtracks to “Twilight” and “New Moon” selling a combined 3.6 million copies, it is no surprise that up-and-coming bands were clamoring for a spot on the soundtrack to “Eclipse”. The biggest winners, according to Rolling Stone, have been “indie, alt, and emo bands”, yet even well-known stars such as Adam Lambert (who told MTV he hoped his song “Suburban Decay” would be considered for “Eclipse”) said they had songs they’d love to see on the soundtrack.

While bands are always looking for more exposure, Death Cab for Cutie manager Jordan Kurland said it best. “There aren’t a whole lot of ways to sell records anymore, and [getting a song on a major soundtrack] is a guaranteed way of doing that”. The manager went on to discuss how inclusion of the band’s song, “Meet Me on the Equinox”, on the “New Moon” soundtrack also beefed up merchandise sales.

“Great songs were sent in by world-class talent,” said “Eclipse” music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas of the selection process for the soundtrack. Yet the article admitted that certain other artists (such as Trent Reznor) were approached, but that “nothing came of the discussions”. Patsavas went on to characterize the soundtrack as having a “louder, more dissonant component to the music.”

The full article goes deeper in discussing specific tracks that were chosen and quotes David Slade on his thoughts on the compilation. To read the full article, pick up an issue of Rolling Stone.

‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ soundtrack song by Vampire Weekend revealed

Vampire Weekend’s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse soundtrack contribution “Jonathan Low” has just been revealed by Stereogum.

The song, which runs at three minutes and twenty seconds, has a very upbeat and stringy feel to it, don’t you think?

Entertainment Weekly described the song as a “pleasingly woolly tangle” and said the the band was “stripped of their habitual Afro-pop swaddling.”

Lead Singer of Metric Writes a Blog Post to Twilight Fans

Yes … It’s official. Our song “All Yours”, co-written with the legendary film composer Howard Shore and performed by Metric, is going to be featured in the movie Eclipse, the next installment in the worldwide phenomenon known as the Twilight saga.

I’ve always wanted to write music for film, but I never expected to start with something on this scale, so you can imagine how surprised I was when out of nowhere I got a phone call from Howard Shore, who I’d never met or even spoken with before. Most people know him as the man who wrote the acclaimed score for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but I grew up on Shore’s earlier works– his score for David Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch in collaboration with jazz great Ornette Coleman still stands as one of the most ambitious & unusual scores out there.

To my amazement, Howard was calling to ask me to work with him on his latest project: scoring the next Twilight movie, Eclipse. He wanted Jimmy & I to write the theme song for the pivotal last scene in the movie, integrating the music from his existing score into a composition that would express the emotional ending of the film. Seriously?!?! The lyrics would have to be in the voice of the main character Bella, and we had to stay within the confines of harmonic and melodic themes Howard had in mind for the last scene.

We’ve had songs from our albums licensed for use in movies & tv shows before, but composing for a score was completely different. Every day as the song progressed–from sitting at the piano with Jimmy in NYC recording acoustic versions and reading the script (see photo below), to working at Howard’s studio upstate, to tracking vocals at our own studio Giant in Toronto, to mixing at Electric Lady with Howard on the line from Abbey Road in London– every step of the way we did our best to fulfill Howard’s vision of the film’s last moments.

Still, everybody knows the movie business is insanely competitive, and for things like this, it’s never a sure thing until the movie is done and the picture is locked…

But as of today, it’s happening. Our song, “All Yours”, is in the movie and will be the lead off track from the soundtrack to be released on June 8th. I don’t have to tell you what an honor it was to be hand picked by Howard to do this work. We are massively grateful for the opportunity & hope you all enjoy Metric’s first ever film composition.

Now, back to reality…

xo emily
