The Long Gestation of Cannes-Bound 'On the Road'

Interesting article about the history of On The Road's production, the announced release dates and some speculation about Cannes :)

After 44 years, possibly the longest gestation period in cinema history, the film version of Jack Kerouac’s classic Beat novel
"On the Road" is finally hitting the big screen. Francis Ford Coppola, then a rising director-screenwriter still in his 20s, bought the film rights to it back in 1968.

The film, directed by Brazilian Walter Salles, was shot in autumn 2010. But it has now been announced that "On the Road" will open in the UK on September 21. A number of other European territories have been confirmed, the first of them being Belgium on May 23.

Intriguingly, given that the film was partly financed by France’s MK2 productions, the French release date has still to be announced. But France and Belgium often go simultaneously with for movie openings – and May 23 is in the second week of the Cannes Film Festival.

This suggests that "On the Road" may have its world premiere in Cannes. Director Salles is a firm favorite on the Croisette; his films "The Motorcycle Diaries" (2004) and "Linha de Passe" (2008) were screened there.

No US distributor has yet been announced for "On the Road."

Viggo Mortensen Talks About 'On The Road' and Mentions Kristen

BuzzSugar: One of your next films coming out is On the Road. How was it filming that movie with Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Stewart, and Tom Sturridge?
Viggo Mortensen: Of the three actors you mention, I only worked with Kristen Stewart, who did a great job with her character from what I could see. Walter Salles, the director, has a light touch and is very kind, extremely intelligent, and very helpful with the actors. Great crew on that shoot. The images I have seen are strikingly beautiful; they really capture post-WW2 USA landscapes, people.

Buzz: Having also starred in The Road, how would you describe the difference between that film and On the Road to your fans?
VM: If you know the books, the only things that they have in common is the word "road" in their titles, the view of a few US roads onscreen, a little suffering, and a little joy to be had from the two journeys . . . The Road has a minimum of characters and barely any dialogue, while On the Road is full of memorable characters who will not or cannot shut up. Different as the two stories are, both books contain gems of concentrated poetic description, uniquely haunting passages that will likely stay with the reader for a long time.

New/Old picture of Kristen from 'One and Only'

"The pic is of Kristen with some of Jack Kerouac's relatives in Montreal. Tit is in the book One and Only. It's the story of Lu Anne's life"

"The people in the photo are Marie Lussier-Timperley and J.A. Michael Bornais."

Few excerpts from the book via @KtewAngel

Kristen read OTR when she was maybe 13 or 14 and told Anne Marie, "I have the original book where I highlighted the parts of Marylou."

Anne Marie on Kristen. "She's only a girl of 20 years, but when she's researching a part, she goes all the way into it."

Anne Marie Santos "She(Kristen) cooked dinner for me and my husband, Reuben, and I learned that Kristen likes to cook, and uses cooking to relax, just like my mother did."

Tom Sturridge on Kristen: "...extraordinary actress, just really, really extraordinary and it's astonishing just to see her do her job."

Tom Sturridge recently talked about his forthcoming movie On The Road and now he has praised his On The Road co star, who is none other than his best friend Robert Pattinson’s girlfriend Kristen Stewart. Tom also admitted that it was a joy to work with a familiar face.

Sturridge explained, “It was so terrifying entering into that world and what was great was just having someone that I knew and actually working with her. She's just a f**king extraordinary actress, just really, really extraordinary and it's astonishing just to see her do her job.”

He then added, “It was genuinely, one of the deepest working experiences I've ever had. It was extraordinary.” Tom Sturridge can be seen on the big screen alongside Kristen Stewart, as well as Garrett Hedlund, when On The Road is released next year.

On The Road Trailer: Shown at a Private Event

@ KSFranceCom: Information, the trailer was shown at OTR # @ MK2Cinema in Exploitans des Congres yesterday. via @erictherock

*Update* More info on the trailer via tweets from @PanicCinema

KStewartfrance- Hello, have you had the opportunity to see the trailer 'on the road' at the Congress? If so, can you tell us your  impression? :) Thanks
  •  It is the adaptation of Kerouac? I do not know what to think but it made me really want to finally read the book, But it's our very own adaptation of a classic. We feel a certain energy in this.
  • I do not have a specific recollection, but I would say 2:30 easily. It is quite rhythmic montage that reveals a lot of pictures of the film Above pictures: a voice, probably the main character, who shares his world view.
  • I seem to have seen majority the actors and few girls so very little Kristen Stewart, but I could be wrong. After 8 hours of trailers non stop, the brain begins to melt;-)

I played around with Google translate and i think this is a better translated part of his tweets, which you can see here. If you are fluent on french and English would love a better translation. Although i think this is about right :P  Hopefully we get to see the trailer very soon :)

Thanks KSFranceCom for the info :)

On The Road, "won't be ready for any fall festivals.."

Like Bailey, Luddy doesn't read scripts, but he keeps in close personal touch with directors. This year he's been tracking his pal Walter Salles for "On the Road," but Salles told Luddy he's still working on the sound and won't be ready for any fall festivals.

Rumour: Touchstone and Dreamworks to distribute "Bel Ami" & "On The Road"?

From RPLife
rumor since IMDb is not the most reliable site. Even IMDbPro has been known for not always posting accurate info. So, for now, we can only hope they're right about this.
Last time we heard official word about a US distributor the message was "the movie still doesn't have distribution"

First stills of Kristen Stewart in 'On the Road', 'K-11' script details revealed

The very first stills of Kristen Stewart in the On The Road have just been unveiled on the French film site CommeauCinema.com. So far, Kristen Stewart looks just incredible as Miss Marylou from Walter Salles' adaptation of Jack Kerouac's autobiography.

On The Road still doesn't have a release date, and the production company, MK2, is based out of Paris. So, that would explain why the first stills from the movie are surfacing there. For more information, please see the film's IMDb.com page!

Also arriving recently is a rich supplement of information about Kristen Stewart's forthcoming K-11 (written by her mother, Jules Mann Stewart).

This movie is about one of Hollywood’s music magnates ending up in the K-11 unit of LA’s male prison. K-11 is a unit sanctioned for gay men and transgendered who wouldn’t be able to survive in normal lock-up. He is inducted into this strange family unit that’s full of love, but tainted with rape, drug trafficking, and abuse. Kristen Stewart is rumored to play Birdy (originally Butterfly), a 19-year-old sweet, red-headed girl (naturally a boy) who befriends the new member and takes care of him. She is flighty like her name, but very damaged. She is raped by a convicted child molester named Detroit who likes Birdy because she is little and young, and to retaliate against the abuse she murders him! In the end the K11 unit works together to overthrow the guard who sexually and verbally abuses them!

It sounds rather graphic but certainly original.

HL also unveiled one of "Birdy's" quotes from the film

Well, if they’d kill you on the main line – you get to go to K-11. I like to think it’s a sanctuary for broken toys. A home away from home.”
