Colleen Atwood talks About Snow White's Costumes and Working with Kristen
When it comes to clothing celebs for the big screen, no one does it quite like costume designer Colleen Atwood.
For her latest project, the three-time Oscar winner tackled dressing the cast of Snow White and the Huntsman and, according to the seasoned pro, she had a little help from the flick’s very own Kristen Stewart with the conceptualization of Snow White’s wardrobe.
“I sat down with Kristen and we talked about her take on it,” the costumer designer told Celebuzz. “I saw her physicality and knew that she was a good girl for moving around and doing a lot of action.”
What did Atwood change for Kristen?
Knowing Kristen’s love of getting involved in filming physical stunts, Atwood ditched Snow White’s famous frilly gown for tattered, leather leggings.
“You make it so it works for them,” she said. “The second thing is that you make it so they look good in it — which for her wasn’t too big of a struggle.”

If you’re follower of costume designer Colleen Atwood, a devoted Kristen Stewart fan or a Chris Hemsworth admirer, Universal is throwing you a great party. It’s called the Snow White and the Huntsmen Pop Up Experience and it opens at 7710 Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood on May 19.
Available for viewing until June 3, you’ll be able to see up close and personal several costumes worn by Kristen and her Huntsman co-star Chris Hemsworth. All were designed by Colleen Atwood, a three time Oscar-winning costume designer, who also designed the costumes for Dark Shadows and is already working on Johnny Depp’s new film, The Thin Man.
Additionally, you can bring your own items or select from the available T-shirt styles, sling and messenger bags, maybe even Converse sneakers at the boutique and have them silkscreened with awesome Snow White-inspired designs created by LA artists. There’s already a call out for original artwork inspired by the film. Of the submissions, 10 artists’ work will be chosen.

Colleen Atwood, SWATH Costume Designer, Talks About Her Costumes for Kristen and Charlize
Get More: Movie Trailers, Movies Blog
Hey Kristen Stewart and reimagined fairy tale fans! Have we got a special treat for you: a brand new exclusive behind-the-scenes look at "Snow White and the Huntsman" with Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood.
Over the course of the nearly four-minute featurette, Atwood, who has three Oscars to her name for "Alice in Wonderland," "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Chicago," walks us through some of the details and inspiration behind the intricate wardrobe worn by the film's leading ladies, Stewart and Charlize Theron.
"I've seen actors find their characters in so many different ways in my life. I think they don't realize they've already found it, but the moment when they put on hair and makeup and the costume, they're there, they've arrived," Atwood said of watching actors try on her designs for the first time. "Sometimes because the costume goes on last after hair and makeup and everything, that feels like the hero, but it's really the [actor]."
One of Stewart's most intricate costumes is her armor, which Atwood said they wanted to tell a story on its own. "There are a lot of messages in her armor. The concept is [Snow White] comes to a place in the story and decides to go to battle and lead her future people," Atwood said. "She doesn't have time to have armor made, so we took elements of different armor to compile a look and so [Stewart] could also do action in it."
Atwood added that Theron's costumes were equally exciting to make. "You can't design for [Queen] Ravenna without having Charlize to work the costume. We had a great time," Atwood said. "She wanted to have fun with it and not be too strapped into the cliché of an evil queen. She wanted to be a person too and later becomes sort of mad.
"The [costumes] get more and more spectral and bug-like as the movie progresses," Atwood continued. "There are a lot of elements of death in her costume, so we used lots of feathers, skulls, small bones. The fun of the design was doing the film equivalent of a couture costume, couture dress," she said.
Atwood said her job is to make costumes that help inspire the actors in their roles, but most importantly help advance the plot. "I like my clothes to inspire," she said. "Most importantly what I want to do is help tell the story and help be part of the collaboration."

Colleen Atwood, Costume Designer, Shares Fashion Secrets from SWATH
“Kristen’s Snow White is a totally different kind of character. She's much less princess-y and more of a bad-ass girl. Her costume is leather with clamps and different stitching on it, so it’s quite different.”
Kristen Loved the Wardrobe
“When I first showed Kristen the costumes, she was really into it. She loved the armor and all the other bits that she has. She’s really not obsessed with clothes at this point in her career. She's young and free from that obsession, and in her previous work she hasn't worn those presentational costumes, so it's kind of new for her. She's still having fun with it.”
Kristen Asked to Take One Piece Home
“Snow White's under-armor jacket is a really a cute little light piece. Kristen was like, ‘Can I have this?’”
Kristen Really Becomes Snow White
“Kristen’s got a great presence as an actor. If you put a costume on somebody that really knows how to wear it, it becomes really strong!”
There's Not a Closet Big Enough to Hold Everything
“Charlize [Theron] has about 15 different variations of costumes and Kristen has about five or six. Chris basically has three looks and Sam has two. The guys have less, but more stages [from clean to battle worn]. Probably by the time we're done we've made over 2,000 costumes with all the multiples and extras in the film.”
Don't Worry, This Snow White Isn't Only Dressed for Battle
“You can't wear armor the whole movie unless you're Joan of Arc or something. It's a good mixture. She has a couple of girly dresses, plus her wedding dress that’s made with leather. There's a really beautiful skirt that goes with it and a skeletal collar that's detachable.”

Colleen Atwood, SWATH Costume Designer, Talks About Kristen and Her Costumes
The puff sleeve is sort of reflected in Kristen’s costume, but that’s about it. The rest of it — she’s a totally different kind of character. She’s much less kind of princess-y and more kind of a badass girl. I just showed her the stuff and she was really into it. She loved the armor and all the other bits that she has, it was — she’s really not obsessed with clothes at this point in her career. She’s young and free from that obsession, and in her work previous she hasn’t worn those presentational costumes, so it’s kind of new for her. She’s got a great presence as an actor and you put a costume on somebody that really knows how to wear it and it becomes really strong and kind of scary.
