Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hensworth recreate the famous fairytale of Grimm Brothers to make a great adventure.

An adaptation very free of the Grimm Brothers’ work, Snow White and the Huntsman was initiated by a screen writer from Disney, Evan Spiliotopoulos, before to be revised by the Iranian Hossein Amini (The Wings of the Bove, Drive). Borrowing from the medieval adventure movie to Braveheart, and heroic fantasy, this ambitious production was given to a newcomer. Indeed, producers Joe Roth and Sam Mercer to whom we owe each Alice in Wonderland and Sixth Sense picked Rupert Sanders. Renowned for his advertisements often experimental dedicated to video games (Halo 3, Call of Duty, Wolverine), Sanders demonstrated an assured visual sense given the logistics and special effects which are in the Snow White and the Huntsman project.

After a very popular cast , the production stopped her choice on the frail heroine of Twilight, Kristen Stewart, most likely to embody the metamorphose of the sweet Snow White in a determined warrior. Face to her, Charlize Theron dove with delight in the part of a fierce Queen for who the beauty and the power are two-edged of a same sword.

Filming in the British studios of Pinewood, the crew of Snow White and the Huntsman took the opportunity to complete its cast with a parade of the best supporting actors of the British cinema (Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, Toby Jones, Brian Gleeson and much more) able to become the most extravagant in the least amount of replicas.

Kristen Stewart: “I’ve never been a fan of fairytales”

The heroin of the twilight saga comes back with a Badass Snow White, but she says she stays true to the classic character. “Snow white and the huntsman” makes its debut in Chile on June 21st.

Protected inside of a centric and luxury Aztec hotel, Kristen Stewart is not indifferent to the chorus of hundreds of fans that have been here throughout the morning and much of the afternoon making a vigil to wait for her to appear on a balcony and greet. And although she does it, the loyal fans do not leave the area waiting of a new appearance.

However, the last years, particularly since this young girl of 22 years old jump to fame with the blockbuster “The twilight Saga”- and who has never publicly acknowledged her relationship romance with her co-star Robert pattinson.-, has learned to love her fans but at the same time fiercely protect her privacy “When I made the first promo world tour I was just 18 years old” tells Stewart, that after posing for photographers in a glamorous outfit receives a "EL MERCURIO" more relaxed in jeans and a sweatshirt. "Now, it’s so much easier to me to be free and talk from my heart, because I know my limits. I don’t play that horrible game of not knowing how much give, and being honest without not being eaten. Before the end of the vampires and werewolves series, Stewart comes back to the Chilean cinemas turned into Snow White, but not the classic fairytale of the immortalized Disney classic. Here is a young lady that must lead a rebel army to take back her throne from her evil stepmother (Charlize theron) and divide her heart between the charming prince (Sam Clafin) and the man sent to kill her (Chris Hemsworth) who becomes her ally. Snow white and the huntsman it’s a super production of $170 million that debuts with success in United States.

- Did you admire this character when you were a child?

“The truth is that I’ve been never a fan of fairy tales; the stories of princess were never my favorites. I mean, I understand why these stories have endured for so long but never did tune with me. That’s why I like this movie, because it was very different. As an actress, I want to challenge myself and discover things, and this Snow white keeps all its delicacy and sweetness, but must fight and become harden.”


- This is a snow white that have to use a sword and fight…

“I love that, especially because everything you see in the movie are things that a girl my size can do. I like challenges, but it is foolish to see a girl like me running and throwing kicks to huge and burly men. I'm no super hero. I hurt a lot during the filming. A lot.


- And considering the lack of action heroines in Hollywood, wouldn’t you like to experience more in that genre?

I think there must be a reason for action. I can’t say I hate a certain genre, but all the characters I play have to come from a place where I feel the story deserves to be told. I'm not a big fan of the idea of ​​just running and killing people just because. It must be something real behind, a good reason.

- How was the experience of working with charlize Theron?

She blows your mind when she enters a room. She has an energy that is pervasive and intimidating. I really wanted to impress her, all the time. It’s always like that when I work with actors I've admired all my life; and then work with her and realize that we do this for the same reasons, it was incredible.


- Do you feel any complications that your movie comes shortly after the other snow white movie, with Julia Roberts and lily Collins?

Lily is a very good friend of mine and we got these roles more or less at the same time. But the truth is, we didn’t do this movie for the impression you may have with the other one or what will people say, I can only say they are very different.

- You still haven't joined twitter. Have you ever had the intention to do so?

I think the most interesting part of me at this moment is that Snow White is being released and I think it's very weird that you believe that you are so interesting and so wonderful. I have no problem with twitter and social networks. Surely if I were not in my position I would have an account, but I think the moment you start to deliver details that are just so yours, you stop knowing who you are. I think it is logical that everyone wants to talk to me about this movie, but if you want to know what I do on Sundays, I ask ‘why you'd want to know that?’ –


Sequel
Even when there is no confirmation of the studio, there is already talk of a possible sequel to "Snow White and the Huntsmant” about it, Stewart says, "no actor is bound by contract, but if the story is good I think we'll all jump happily at the prospect of continuing this story”

Kristen and Chris, sturdy fairytale couple.

It takes some getting used to see Kristen Stewart with different hunks than Robert Pattinson or Taylor Lautner. But to be honest, she and Chris Hemsworth look like a promising couple in Snow White and The Huntsman. Kristen isn't a vampire girlfriend anymore, but a kick ass princess, while Chris plays a handsome huntsman. STARS went to LA for an exclusive interview.

Q:This is your first big movie without Rob and Taylor. Didn't you miss them, Kristen?

K: Of course I missed my boys. They became my family through the years and it's weird not to see them when you get on set in the morning. But fortunately was Chris by my side. We became very closed very fast so he was the perfect replacement for my two buddy's.

C: I really thought I was lucky to like Kristen because I had an opponent I didn't like for a several times. And it's hard to play together every day and pretend you like each other. Kris is a darling, she takes her job very seriously and I like that. And even more important; she isn't a diva.

No other fairytale has as many varieties, offers so many liberties for interpretation and was made into a movie as often as “Snow White”. This year alone there are 2 movies in cinema and one on DVD (Snow White – A Deady Summer). Mirror, Mirror was a grandly equipped movie from Tarsem Singh with Julia Roberts as queen and Lily Collins as Snow White. Now the second version, Rupert Sanders directing debut, promises to be darker than the rather light version from Singh.

The Twilight star talks embodying a fairytale and Chris Hemsworth’s Lord of the Rings obsession …

“Bella and Snow White both come to find that they’re leaders. I mean, that’s definitely a similarity. They’re very, very, very different people. Also, everyone’s telling them ‘No.’ And both of them see the light. Both of them are a little more intuitive, and for whatever reason spiritually connected. Their gut is always dead right.

“It’s strange playing a character that you could never truly embody. Her spirit affects people in such a way that – you know, I can’t have Snow White’s effect on people. I can’t actually be completely selfless, because nobody is. You can only really play a character like that and play it with an awful load of integrity in a fairytale. She’s fully formed but far-fetched from the reality that we live in. She’s strong in a very different way than you’d expect. You see the degradation of the people, and it’s like she’s a voodoo doll. If they’re in pain, she’s in pain.

“It takes her the whole movie basically to become who I’m talking about now. It’s a total identity movie. It’s all about not finding yourself, but actually just being okay with who you known you always have been, and not being ashamed of being the only one who sees the light. It’s an enormous burden and she;s so stunned, She was put away when she wa seven years old and her mother and father were killed in front of her. We’re not doing the version of a fairytale that wouldn’t deal with all of those things, where you just sort of skim over all those things.

“Chris is an amazing, nice guy and also has great instincts. He can roll with everything on set. He’s really relaxed, whereas I’m always like, ‘Oh my god!’ He’s a good energy for me. I really like working with him. He is obsessed with The Lord of the Rings and he was always, like, humming Enya when we were trudging up the mountain. I was saying, ‘You should do a remake of Lord of the Rings. Why are you doing this? We’re doing Snow White and the Huntsman, Chris!”

So who better to play Snow White than Kristen Stewart? The 21-year-old star has already played her fair share of iron-willed characters, whether it’s Twilight’s Bella Swan, leather clad rocker Joan Jett from The Runaways, or her stripper in Welcome to the Rileys.

Mind you, when FilmInk is ushered inside onto the soundstage where Stewart is currently filming, she’s in a bind. In an antechamber, lit with candles and awash with the scent of burning oil lamps, Snow White is on her back, facing her nemesis. Towering over her, Queen Raveena - as played by the statuesque Charlize Theron - is about to skewer her with a dagger. Plunging the blade towards her, the Queen yells, “By fairest blood, it is done,” only for Snow White to somehow repel her at the last possible second.

The take is over, and while the crew re-lights the scene, Stewart bounds over for a chat, looking like the true warrior in her chainmail and breastplate. “I was trying to think the other day what films have women in armour,” she muses. Joan of Arc? “Yeah that, and, I guess, Elizabeth, and that’s it.” With the chance to show her mettle, it is little wonder that Stewart jumped at the chance to play such a radical reinvention of the heroine, even if early gossip suggested that she wasn’t interested in taking on the role in the wake of just having finished the Twilight franchise. “That was perpetuated by the idea that I didn’t see myself playing Disney’s Snow White, in the cartoon,” she notes. “ But we have stayed so true to who she is, classically, if you read the fairytale. We’re doing a really true rendition of who she is.” Which is? “She’s a character that does truly lack vanity...not to say that everyone is stuck up, but a certain point, you are aware of yourself, and she simply doesn’t have that, which is cool. She’s kind of stunted. She’s a very odd little combination of personality traits. She’s kind of a freak!”:

Stewart also liked the duality that her Snow White was given. “It’s cool to play a character that is able to step outside of herself and consider others in an almost supernatural way, but at the same time, knows that she’s human and has those struggles and still fights for herself. She’s just the essential leader. Our Snow White is the definition of what makes a hero...so many of our heroes are assholes. They find pleasure in hurting people. She doesn’t. Yet, she can seriously take care of business.”

With Stewart noting that the film is “not taking the story and turning it on its head, Snow White and the Huntsman does follow the original Brother’s Grimm tale closely - for a while, at least - as The Huntsman (Thor star, Chris Hemsworth) is instructed by the Queen to take Snow White into the forest and kill her. The twist comes when he switches allegiances and becomes her protector, even tutoring her in combat and sword-play. Together, they then join forces to bring down the evil Queen. “He’s a comforting presence,” Stewart admits of Hemsworth. “I know his type.”

Stewart was one of several key cast members impressed by this. [regarding the 3 and a half minute trailer, as presented at ComicCon] “That was the first thing that drove me to do the project.” she says. “The story was amazing, but it’s about beauty, so unless it’s beautiful, it’s just not going to make an impact.” Stewart credits Sanders’ desire to collaborate too. “Something that actors always talk about is, ‘Oh, it’s been such a collaboration...we really are a family’, but me and him really are on the same page. We’re a team, and that’s rare...really rare.”

Likewise, there will be blood. “We’re not shying away from the parts that are gruesome, because it makes the parts that are beautiful that much more beautiful,” says Stewart. Beauty, of course, is a key theme in Snow White, revolving around the Queen’s obsession with her own image and being “the fairest of them all”. “It doesn’t mean beautiful, it means fair,” corrects Stewart. “It’s what’s pumping through her veins, rather then what you look like. I don’t know if the Queen is aware of that, at least until the end, and she realises ‘Oh, fair is not necessarily what I thought it was.’”

According to Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron was doing exactly the same thing. “She is not afraid to take a hit,” says the young actress of her Oscar winning co-star. “She keeps telling me to hit her harder. We’re fairly similar in that we do shut off when the cameras start rolling. Not to totally blow her cover, but we both go into a zone, and it gets fairly dangerous.”

Despite, the undeniable presence and charisma of Chris Hemsworth, this is ultimately what makes Snow White & The Huntsman such a stand-alone: it’s the rarest of Hollywood action movies in that it is led by two strong female protagonists. “It is fairly common to have your story as a woman, even if you’re the protagonist, facilitated by all of the male characters,” says Kristen Stewart, “It’s so rare to have a female lead character being so proactive. She pushers her own story forward, rather then being affected by all of the outside elements. Hopefully we do that, I’m really proud to be a part of something like that. It’s always food for women to feel empowered.”
