"It's annoying that people think, 'Oh, is this the role where she's going to show everyone how she's grown?,'" Kristen Stewart told Indiewire last Friday in Cannes. "I'm not trying to show anyone anything."

CANNES- France — In the opening scene of “The Clouds of Sils Maria”, presented at the end of the 67th Cannes Festival last Friday, Kristen Stewart’s character, Val, is clearly stressed-out. As the train snakes up the winding mountain route of the Swiss Alps, Val is juggling with her multiple jangling cell phones, cursing the bad connection, and trying to deal with the barrage of undesirable media, pestering directors and dramatic news that will dramatically change her entire schedule.

"The movie shows things can look different if you're looking at them from different angles. It's also about what you need to feel inside of you to create something or to be artistic. And the price you have to pay for years and years of complete devotion and the sudden feeling, there's nothing left of yourself. Of course, that's kinda ridiculous, because she's still alive, but that's what Maria sees in Valentine. Even if she won't admit it. Valentine warms her up and gives her new perspectives on things."

"Valentine is Maria Enders' personal assistant. The type of girl that I have definitely seen on many sets and in many environments. Sort of... Not the average assistant, but someone who is probably going somewhere, definitely has ambition and interest. She really, really admire Maria Enders, who is Juliette's character. She would probably not work for another actress. She could assist a producer or work behind the scenes. In Maria she found someone who's worth sucking a bit of life out of her. And I've seen that kind of relationship a couple times. And here it's so perfectly put together. They're having dynamics that I've definitely seen before."

Kristen Stewart can’t understand why people make such a big deal when she swaps stilettos for sneakers after walking the red carpet.

“For some reason it pisses people off when I change after a red carpet. If I think about why people have these expectations of me it makes sense, but I genuinely think that if people thought about it for two seconds they’d be like, ‘Oh my God, why do I care that that girl just put some f—ing sneakers on?’” the actress tells PEOPLE. “Are you seriously mad that I put on some Vans after an hour of being in heels? I’m so sorry to have upset you, you crazy person.”
