Oliver Assayas & Juliette Binoche Talk About Kristen & Clouds of Sils Maria

Q: In light of that observation, what's your take on Kristen Stewart?
Olivier: I'm extremely grateful and admiring of Kristen, in the sense that she can do more or less what she wants — I mean, she has a lot of options. That's the least one can say. And she's doing indie films. She wants to remain part of that world. She's taking risks, trying things, and when she spends two months in Europe with a bunch of weird French filmmakers, she's completely cut off from her world. You know, we're shooting in Leipzig, it's not like you can just go home for the weekend. I mean, you're stuck there. She's there because she thinks she has something to learn — not so much from me but from Juliette, specifically about how she's been able to keep some sort of hold on what she's been doing and how she's been asserting her freedom and her own weird choices. I think that she works in a slightly different space and has the intuition that there is something there for her.

Your next movie will co-star Robert Pattinson. Do you feel similarly about him?
I met him in London at a very early stage before I shot "Sils Maria" while I was still working on the screenplay for my next film, but I knew I wanted him for the leading role. We had a long conversation in London about the project. That's also one of the first times I met Kristen. She was around.
Does working with these younger, well-known U.S. actors make it easier for you to get your films done?
No. You know, a movie like "Sils Maria" functions pretty much the same way as my other movies in terms of how I build it. I have a similar budget. It's a small film. We shot in 32 days, six weeks.

Kristen on the cover of Telerama ( France ) New Cannes Portraits + Interview Translation

"All this circus is fake"
In the next Olivier Assayas movie, Kristen Stewart revealed at 18 with Twilight, plays the assistant of a star. The occasion for the star assaulted by the paps to report the perverse effect of that business.
The most hardened night hawks only just deserted Cannes' night club that was on the roof of palace on the Croisette. In the sticky dust and the lingering odour of cold tabacco another circus is rolling out. After causing a peak of fever during the ultimate red carpet of the competition, Kristen Stewart, the evanescent star of Twilight, comes to make the express promotion of Sils Maria, the movie by Olivier Assayas, where she assures a fantastic acting temperament. In the darkness of the night club returning to the light, the screens sparkle close to the collapsed green plants, the phones and walkie-talkies are overheating, the press agents briefly meet one other and talk without understanding one another, the photographers have they feet caught in the cables. When the young California star finally appears, she sees herself cornered by the sun, a window that underlines her pallor. Big circles are forming at respectable distance, like many security perimeters, where she looks, under the flashes, like a butterfly against the window. "What an unbelievable show! I know it by heart but here it's almost funny to observe it" she said later.
Juliette Binoche talks about working with Kristen in 'Clouds of Sils Maria'

“When the camera was on Kristen, sometimes I dared to push her. I would go and go and go. Kristen has an amazing potential, but she needs to open up, she needs to get in more. So when you see that, you want to help, you want to go for it.”
Did Binoche push Stewart to new heights by shoot’s end?
“She said that, and she knows it,” Binoche replies. “Between actors, there’s often the back and forth. You’re trying to see where you can go together. That’s the joy of movies or theatre — otherwise I’d be alone in my studio working on my paintings.”

Sils Maria Director, Olivier Assayas, talks about Kristen

"I wanted to work with Kristen Stewart. I've always like what she does, and when I met her I felt a very strong prescense," he recognizes. "When I proposed to her the part, I thought she wouldn't do it and that it would be delicate for someone so popular. The movie talks about just that, the culture of the celebrities. But it was the opposite, I think she liked the idea of the perspective," he adds.Source via via via - Translation
He also ensures it didn't even crossed his mind that her prescense could distract from the real focus of the movie. "[In this movie] she's so different than what we always see of her in Hollywood. She [Stewart] is an impressive actress and I was lucky to have done a movie with her in this moment of her career. It's beautiful seeing an actress say 'Can I try this or that, Is this allowed'."
