New Rob Interview with LA Times + People Talking About Rob

On the list of life's great pleasures, walking down a grim street in a one-horse Australian town probably doesn’t rank very high.

Yet if you're one of the world most recognized -- and harangued -- faces, it can have a remarkable effect on your psyche and work.

So it went, at least, for former “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson. The actor made the new post-apocalyptic Western “The Rover” in the otherworldly solitude of remotest Australia -- veritable ghost towns with names such as Leigh Creek and Quorn -- allowing him to escape the maddening swarms and focus on his acting as never before.

David Michod Talks About Rob with Cinema Australia

How exciting was it for you to get Robert on board. There’s a huge commercial element and a built in audience that comes with Robert, so was that a factor in your excitement?
It remains to be seen because I never know what the commercial results of having an actor in your movie might be but there is certainly a thrill to be had in knowing that you’ll be working with someone who is as profoundly famous as Robert is and giving them an opportunity to demonstrate a skill set that people possibly don’t even know he has. I think Robert is extraordinary in this movie. I’ve obviously seen it a thousand times and I just love losing myself in his performance and I love watching him and Guy bounce off each other. Two wildly different characters having to figure each other out performed by wonderful actors. This is what the thrill of directing is all about.

Did they get along off screen?
Totally. They’re both really beautiful human beings and given the nature of the shoot and that we were out in the middle of nowhere in really challenging conditions meant that after a days work was done we really bonded in a warm and special way.

Q: How aware of Robert Pattinson were you before the film and how was it working with him?

Guy Pearce Talks About Rob and his Character, Rey

Your uneasy relationship with Robert Pattinson jump-starts the narrative.
Yeah, he was lovely and I was so impressed with what he did in the film. I was touched by the vulnerability of his character. He’s almost like a little kid or a vulnerable animal that needs to be looked after. You can’t help but empathize with him. And then it meant that I knew the power that I, as Eric, could exert over him—even in the few first moments when I speak to him. I just let him know that he means nothing to me. I guess I’m trying to deny what he does mean to me and I end up having to take him with me to find his brother. I just have to let him know that he means nothing to me, personally. It’s a way of him asking if we can connect and me more or less responding “absolutely no way.”

David Michod Talks About Rob with HitFix

Michôd burst on the scene in 2010 after "Animal Kingdom" became, arguably, Sundance's greatest foreign success of the past decade. Not only did it launch Michôd's career, but it earned star Jacki Weaver her first Academy Award nomination and long=deserved recognition outside of Australia. And directing an actor to an Oscar nomination in your first film is sort of big deal. Instead of being swooped up by a major studio project, however, Michôd reunited with his "Kingdom" colleagues and friends for "The Rover," which premiered Sunday as a midnight selection in Cannes.

New Rob Interview with AP + Pearce, Cronenberg and Michod Talk About Him

For the past year, Robert Pattinson has been trying to disappear. He says he's been actively avoiding having his photo taken, trying to erase a tabloid persona.

"I'm just trying to not be in stupid gossip magazines, basically, and I think the best way to do it is never be photographed ever," says Pattinson. "As I get older, I just get more and more and more self-conscious about getting photographed. I don't know why. I've done it too many times and now I feel like everyone can see through me."

Werner Herzog Talks About Rob and Twilight

Herzog claims that cinema has “a very unique way” of dealing with the vampire myth, and while his high esteem for Kinski’s legacy has barred him from considering most future iterations, a surprising exception is the “Twilight” series of films. His reaction? “Not that bad, I was surprised to find.”

“We have to take it seriously that there are films out there that know how to address a 14 or 15-year-old,” he added. “This is a very special sort of approach and I couldn't do it, yet these films could. I see that much of it is silly but at the same time I respect these films. And I just worked with one of the actors, Robert Pattinson [in Herzog’s upcoming ‘Queen of the Desert’], and he's a wonderful, fine actor. He's clearly stepping out of these roles that make the teenies screech.”

Pearce's barely controlled ferocity as Eric is exceptional, but it is not as much of a revelation as Pattinson's unrecognizable work as Rey, a damaged, unfocused individual who is the older man's half-unwilling accomplice.

David Michod Talks About Rob and His Character in 'The Rover'

How did you choose your actors?
I had Guy Pearce in mind from the beginning. We needed a man who was his age, who had a quiet and mysterious strength, who had is talent and his extraordinary attention to detail. I didn't forget the pleasure I had working with him on Animal Kingdom. Rob (Pattinson) came later. We met, I liked him a lot and then he did some screen tests for me, awesome tests, full of life, never forced or artificial, and it was done. And there is something very exciting in having the opportunity to show the world that a star underestimated and reduced to a certain image actually has a wealth of unexploited talent. I quickly found out that Rob is a great actor. And I look forward to everyone can realize the same.

If Guy Pearce's character is the "Rover", how do you define Robert Pattinson's?
He is also a "rover". Guy is a rover in the sense of "wanderer". But in classical English, "rover" is also used as affectionate term for a dog. Rob follows Guy everywhere, a bit like a lost dog would.

David Cronenberg Talks About Working with Rob and Maps To The Stars

"Maps to the Stars" takes aim at Hollywood excess, with an ensemble cast including a bleach-blond Julianne Moore playing a hysterical actress and Mia Wasikowska playing the mysterious, scarred young woman who suddenly appears in her life.

Although it marks the first time Cronenberg, known for "A History of Violence" and "Eastern Promises," has made a film about Hollywood, he said he has been trying to make the movie — based on a script by novelist Bruce Wagner — for a decade.

"I've never really been obsessed with doing a movie about movie-making or anything like that, but in a way his script was not that. It's about ambition and fear and desperation and a whole bunch of other things within the context of movie-making," he said.

The film reunites Cronenberg with "Cosmopolis" star Robert Pattinson, who the director called "a terrific actor."

"When we did 'Cosmopolis,' he didn't really want to do it because his character was in every scene. He really wanted to be in an ensemble piece, where he was one of a great cast of actors," said Cronenberg. "I said, 'We talked about that and here it is. Here's a perfect role for you.'"
