Life wasn’t part of the TIFF announcement this morning, is there potential for a 2014 release? 
No, that’ll be 2015. We haven’t locked picture yet. We still have two more months of sound and [potential] pick-up shoots.

In your background in photography, you’ve photographed numerous icons. Your first film, Control, was a portrait of the iconic Ian Curtis (singer for Joy Division), who died very young. I guess now we’ve confirmed that next year, you have a film that involves James Dean (to be played by Dane DeHaan) in Life. Who also died very young. Is it more difficult to capture an iconic photograph of an individual in life, or to tell their story in death? 
I’m flattered that people think my pictures are iconic. That’s not what I set out to be. A lot of people that I worked with in the 70s and 80s were not very well known people, but they became [well known] later. So I’ve not deliberately sought icons. As far as making films for Ian Curtis and James Dean, that is, of course, is very deliberate. Ian Curtis was someone that I knew and I moved to England to make it because I wanted to make it. It was a personal project. And, also, I thought there was a good love story there (between Sam Riley and Samantha Morton).

With Life it’s first and foremost a story about a photographer, Dennis Stock (Robert Pattinson), who profiled James Dean (DeHaan). So it’s the story of a photographer and their subject. As a photographer that story interested me: studying the power balance between a photographer and their subject. You know, who influences who? The James Dean portion of the story wasn’t my interest. In fact I’d turned down a straight James Dean project once before.

What about Robert Pattinson’s work in the movie?
Rob and Dan very different kind of actors. They’re very, very different kind of people in the film, so it was fantastic. They were so different naturally. For Rob to play a photographer is quite interesting because he’s being chased by photographers all the time. Rob is of course a film star, but he likes to be seen as an actor, so he works very hard to be an actor and be valued as an actor. And in the film he plays this photographer who wants to be seen as a great photographer. So I think there’s a parallel there that’s helpful.

He’s made a lot of interesting acting choices, “Cosmopolis”…
...Yeah, “The Rover.” I hear that “Map to the Stars” is a really great film. I am looking forward to seeing it.

I was hoping to see “Life” announced as part of the TIFF 2014 lineup.
Yeah, I was hoping that too, but we are too far from finishing, because we finished [shooting] in late October.

Will we see it at on the fall festival circuit anywhere?
I reckon it will be 2015.

Like some of his recent films, it’s a very different movie for Pattinson.
The screentime is easily divided between Dane DeHaan and Rob, and they’re very different actors. Rob, I think he’s working to be seen as a proper actor and not as a movie star. He takes a lot of challenging roles, and tries to work with directors that are a bit away from the mainstream. The fact that he maybe wants to prove himself as an actor was very good for the role of Dennis Stock, who wants to prove himself as being a great photographer. Also, for Rob to be on the other end of the camera was quite interesting.

Did you give Pattinson advice on being a photographer?
I got a camera to him quite a few months before we started shooting. An old Leica so he could put film in it and get comfortable with it.

Playboy: For your next film 'Queen of the Desert' you have cast 'Twilight' teen heartthrob Robert Pattinson.

Herzog: He approached me. That is why I am taken seriously in Hollywood. Because so many good actors want to work with me. Nicolas Cage was never better than in 'Bad Lieutenant'.

Playboy: What do you see in Robert Pattinson?

I got to know Chaske [Spencer], BooBoo [Stewart], Alex [Meraz], Christian [Serratos], Peter [Facinelli], Edi [Gathegi], and Anna really well over the years, along with others. McKenzie: With so much action, I hardly remember the weight of the gun. We did not film Eric being tasered, Rob really wanted to, and do it for real. Thank goodness, I would hate to have been the one to have to taser him! I've been exposed to all kind of guns on set and they always terrify me.

ROBsessed: Who was stronger? You or Rob?

McKenzie: I think he is a gentleman and would let me win if we wrestled.

ROBsessed: Tell us something we might not know about Rob and David.

McKenzie: They are two of the sweetest men in Hollywood. Both are extremely humble in person and lack pretension. I felt very comfortable around both of them. David Cronenberg gave me a big hug the first time I ever saw him, and he said he was happy to finally meet me, which was so disarming, charming and fatherly. I think that is when I fell in love, because I will give everything to a director that makes me feel as safe and protected as a child. And Cronenberg is so patient. He gives everyone on set all the time they need to do their best work, and speaks quietly to keep the atmosphere on set very calm and enjoyable. David was also very patient with my fawning over him at the warp party, because I was so appreciative of his work style I just couldn't help gushing like a schoolgirl with with a crush, very embarrassing in retrospect. I didn't expect Rob to be so tall, and so charming.

A star whose style I love is…

Robert Pattinson. He’s brought a distinct perspective to tailoring to the red carpet. And he’s so dashing!

The Host is very much in the same vein as Twilight, and there’s clearly a huge fan base out there. But I can’t imagine myself being as huge as Robert Pattinson. I’m not sure I could handle that level of fame.

We know that Cosmopolis is a big movie that is extremely contemporary and modern. A little word about Robert Pattinson, he's attracting all the attention today and he took a lot of risks by working with David Cronenberg. Do you think he succeeded on his big break since Twilight and that he became a credible actor when it comes to cinema?

It's obvious that he's a big start when you see the crowds he draws in on the croisette. He's a huge star but he's incredibly serious, an extraordinary movie fanatic and he's incredibly intelligent compared to the image the media tried to paint him with for a few yers now. He's such a wonderful boy, he's a movie star in the popular cinema for sure but he belongs in the auteur cinema too, in such a natural way. He's an amazing guy! He has looks that help him become an actor but he uses them, put them on a different level. It's all about his spirit, his heart and the emotions he has that talk and express themselves in this movie. He doesn't show off/uses his looks. He's really, really good.

I have a weird relationship with fame. It's hard to live sometimes but I don't want to complain. People are nice with me and I think it comes with the way you handle things.

For example, I think it's totally different from what Rob (Pattinson) lives. He's a guy I like a lot - and no I do not have his cell phone number, I say this because it's always the first thing people ask me. He's a sex symbol. He's sexy and just need to do his brooding look for girls to fall. He has the perfect height to seduce girls, I'm the total opposite (laughs). He might be charming and cute, wild and sexy ..
