Rob's Birthday Countdown~'Remember Me'

Looking back at 'Remember Me' today. This is one of my favorite Rob roles, but I find it really hard to watch because of the emotions I feel watching it. I've had people ask what could I like about this movie? It's depressing and doesn't have a happy ending. But it's real, raw and teachs us you have to live life to the fullest. You have to make sure you let those people you love know that you love them, hold on to them. Before I start with the tears...

Robert Pattinson beyond the Twilight saga. Escaping from the condition of Matinee Idol

(Almost) every movie teen idol went through this, from Johnny Depp to Leonardo DiCaprio: having achieved success with a series of films or TV programs aimed at younger audiences, were they called 21 Jump Street or the blockbuster Titanic, afterwards they had to prove their real acting value confronting themselves with more difficult and mature roles, even succeeding in being nominated at the Oscars (and not just once). In the United States male stars flattered by fans as that are known by a term, “Matinee idol”, that comes even from Rudolph Valentino’s time and that indicates the young age of the fans who, since they can’t go to the cinema at night, crowd the theaters on the first show of the afternoon (that is the Matinée). No doubt Robert Pattinson is the contemporary matinée idol who, as many colleagues before him (even less lucky, like River Phoenix or Christian Slater) with the explosion of the Twilight saga has found himself in the eye of the storm, besieged by fans and paparazzi and constantly on the covers of the tabloids. Now, while the saga moves towards the two final episodes of Breaking Dawn (which November 16, 2012 will establish the end of the cycle based on Stephenie Meyer’s books) Pattinson is trying to build himself a future choosing roles that are different from the vampire Edward Cullen. For his first step towards emancipation and the new career post-Twilight, the British actor has chosen Remember Me, a family drama directed by a veteran of TV series as Allen Coulter, who has worked on the Sopranos, Sex and the City, and Nurse Jackie, and soon on the upcoming series about the prohibition signed also by Scorsese, Broadwalk Empire (from September 18 on HBO in America). As a further guarantee to get out of the condition of matinée ido,l Pattinson has then wanted for Remember Me a high level surround with veterans such as Chris Cooper (Oscar in 2003 for Adaptation), Pierce Brosnan, Lena Olin and the new Lost star Emilie de Ravin. The result is a definitely good movie, in which Pattinson, with his interpretation of the rebel Tyler Hawkins, looks straight towards another great matinée idol as James Dean and his tormented acting in Rebel without a cause. Obviously, the comparison works just partially since the two guys, although the age is the same in both movies (24), can’t definitely be associated, the distance is still too much. However Remember me remains a good attempt to come out of the gothic sphere of Twilight, not a movie for twilighters or twi-hards, but one that can be enjoyed by everyone waiting for the other moves of R-Pattz, rapidly escaping from the condition of teen idol, called Bel-Ami, ambitious transposition of Guy de Maupassant with which he will have to stand up to females like Kristin Scott Thomas, Christina Ricci, and Uma Thurman, and Water for Elephant,s in which he will have to confront two Oscar winners like Christoph Waltz and Reese Whiterspoon. Life’s hard for the matinée idol.

Robert Pattinson\'s REMEMBER ME Box Office Update: Close to $55 Million Worldwide

Robert Pattinson’s Remember Me has likely crossed — or at least is quite near — the $55m mark worldwide. In the United States and Canada, Allen Coulter’s romantic melodrama starring Pattinson, Lost’s Emilie de Ravin, and Pierce Brosnan, has grossed $19.025m to date. Overseas, box-office figures found at Box Office Mojo add up to $33.139m. Total: 52,164m.

However, as I’ve mentioned in a previous post about Remember Me’s international box-office performance, Box Office Mojo’s figures for foreign countries are incomplete.

Less than half the countries listed have fully updated box-office totals (Sunday, May 2), while key markets such as Brazil, Australia, Russia, and "near-major" markets such as the Netherlands and Poland haven’t had their figures updated in weeks. Also, Swiss figures are unavailable.

Additionally, British and French box-office numbers for Remember Me are a week old.

Remember Me has done particularly well in the UK — the London-born Pattinson was present at the movie’s premiere in his native city — grossing $5.494m (includes Ireland).

Although that doesn’t mean Remember Me was a runaway hit in that country, it does mean that it did quite well for a "non-commercial" intimate drama. Obviously, Pattinson was the chief reason for the film’s box-office pull.

Other key Remember Me markets are: France with $3.534m, Russia/CIS with $3.396m, Germany with $3.311m, Spain with $2.566m, Italy with $2.358m, Brazil $1.893m, Belgium/Luxemburg with $1.288m, and Australia with $1.216m.

Remember Me has yet to open in three major markets: China, Japan, and South Korea. It opens in Hungary, where Pattinson filmed parts of Bel Ami, today.

Next, Robert Pattinson will be seen as the vampire Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, directed by David Slade, and co-starring Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner.

Rob talks RememberMe in SkyView magazine (Mexico)

Tyler’s character reminds us of James Dean, where you inspired by him?

Not necessarily. I think it’s a side that every person has. It’s true that this character has something very ‘Rebel without a cause’ about him, but there were other sides of Tyler that interested me, like his arrogant side. He tragically lost a family member and I think that his reverly and anger towards them it’s because he stopped being the center of attention. I tried to make these things very present when playing the character. There’s a big reason why the James Dean stereotype is still so present to this day, especially among young actors.

What was it like working with Pierce Brosnan? Obviously you guys had to work with certain tension between you. Did it interfere with your relatiship with him?

Not at all. There was no real tension. He’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. I had no idea what to think of him in the beginning, but he’s very hardworking, and not pretencious at all. We didn’t have a lot off scenes together but he was very kind to me. It was wonderful.

The main characters in the movie seem to appreciate life very much, do you think there’s a lesson for the audience?

One of the things that I liked about the story is that neither of the main characters had the idea that love is supposed to last forever. Thy are both just enjoying the happy moments they are living, and they are very valuable to them, even if they’re very short moments.

And what makes you happy?

The little things that are not very common. What I tried to communicate in the movie is that there’s little things that in life that sneek up on you, and surprise you.

Are you trying to mark a difference between your character in Twilight and the characters that you’re doing now, so that people know you’re more than Edward Cullen?

No, I’m not focused in that. I’m still choosing my roles the same way I always did. At least I still think I do. There’s very few things that interest me, so it’s easy for me to choose what I’m going to do next. All the projects that I’ve chosen have been very different from each other. I’m going to play soon a guy that was raised by aboriginals, and all my dialogue is in comanche. Right now I’m doing Bel Ami, which is very ironic because all these women fall for this guy but he just wants to steal their money. I thought it was a fun contrast from Edward Cullen.

Because he’s such a romantic?

Yes, and he’s the total opposite of that. But it wasn’t intentional. I thought it was a very fun movie, and my role is very interesting. I had never done such a simple role, and by simple I don’t mean shallow, I mean normal. He’s a relief in many ways.

Can you still have a normal life?

Only in London, where I go to low-key places. There’s so many places there that I can go to and nobody knows who I am. I’ve gone to a pub where the bartender tells me everytime she sees me how much I look like the guy in the Twilight movies. It’s funny because she tells me the same thing every single time. Fortunately, people aren’t thinking in movies all the time so if they see me in the streets they’er embarrassed to say anything. Fame has its good side. I’m not struggling to get work now, and I can go from one movie to the next. To be honest I have the best position that any actor my age would want.
