Robert Pattinson dies in the Twin Towers, Remember Me.No, this wasn’t a great death scene by any means, but I’ll be damned if I won’t think of it every time i see Pattinson’s face for the rest of my life, standing in front of the window and the camera tracking back to reveal– dumb dumb dumb!– the doomed towers. It’s not just that it’s tasteless, though it’s that too, but that the surprise hinges entirely on the audience not putting together the math that the movie takes place in summer 2001, even though it starts with a prologue set in 1991 then jumps to “10 years later.” So absurd, and yet so memorable.

I remember getting an Atari for my 10th birthday. That was a big surprise. When I caught the top of those tiny ted joysticks atop of their black spongy controls, I knew my entry into double figure land was going to be one to remember. Wanna know what a bigger surprise was? ”Remember Me”! This truly out Gorfed Gorf and Swallowed Pac Man hole in terms of pleasant surprises – I kid you not. Say what you will about his sparkling work in those vampire pics, Robert Pattinson delivers one of the richest and most weighty performances of any actor this year with his uneasy son and lover at the center of director Allen Coulter’s love letter to 9/11 (yes, there is such a thing). Catch it on DVD – you’ll find it, unjustly, at the ‘bottom’ of the new releases shelf.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences have announced that 248 feature films are eligible for best picture at the 2010 Academy Awards. The number is down from previous years — According to THR, 274 films were eligible in 2009, and 281 in 2008.
The list of 248 eligible films have been sent with a nominations ballot to all active and life members of the Academy “who shall vote in the order of their preference for not more than ten pictures.” The ten films receiving the highest number of votes shall become the nominations for final voting for the Best Picture award. The nominations will be announced live on January 25th 2011 at 5:30am psd.
The rules for eligibility is as follows:
- Films must be feature length (defined as over 40 minutes)
- Publicly exhibited by means of 35mm or 70mm film, or in a 24- or 48-frame progressive scan Digital Cinema format with a minimum projector resolution of 2048 by 1080 pixels
- For paid admission in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County for a qualifying run of at least seven consecutive days, advertised and exploited during their Los Angeles County qualifying run in a manner considered normal and customary to the industry.
- Films that, in any version, receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release will not be eligible for Academy Awards in any category. (This includes broadcast and cable television as well as home video marketing and Internet transmission.) However, ten minutes or ten percent of the running time of a film, whichever is shorter, is allowed to be shown in a nontheatrical medium prior to the film’s theatrical release.
