NPR Talks 2011 Books-Into-Films: ‘Water for Elephants’
From NPR:
Water For Elephants (April 22)
The Book: A runaway bestseller, Sara Gruen’s historical novel centers on circus worker Jacob Jankowski and the eclectic cast of characters working for The Benzini Brothers’ Most Spectacular Show on Earth. Gruen wrote the novel in a month, apparently, basing the core of the book on the story of Jacob from the Book of Genesis. The paperback edition hit #1 on the New York Times bestseller list in 2007.
The Film: Combine one-part Reese Witherspoon and one-part Robert Pattinson, and a couple of pachyderms, and you may have Pattinson’s most successful book-to-screen outing that isn’t Twilight. Bonus: Fewer screaming girls to contend with. Trailer here.
See It With: Circus folk. You know some, right?

#WFE: Reese Witherspoon talks about her onscreen romance with Robert Pattinson
Reese Witherspoon credits an elephant with being one of the best co-stars she's had.
The 'Water For Elephants' actress loved working alongside the animal because it was both dangerous and challenging.
She said: "It was one of the best experiences of my career. I worked with her for three months just training. I had to get into shape - I had no harness, no safety equipment, nothing.
Robert Pattinson's character comes in and he's a vet and we end up being very interested in each other. It's very romantic and beautiful.

Robert Pattinson Knocked Down In New ‘Water For Elephants’ Photo
Robert Pattinson knocked down in new ‘Water For Elephants’ photo. Twilight Saga leading man Robert Pattinson is spotted getting knocked to the ground in this new photo from his upcoming “Water For Elephants” movie.
Apparently, this is one of the scenes where Robert’s character Jacob gets into a fight with Marlena’s (Reese Witherspoon) husband August (Christoph Waltz) for making the moves on her. In the flick, Jacob joins a circus as a vet,and eventually falls in love with one of the stars of the show Marlena.
However, she’s married to a crazy animal trainer named August who from looking at this photo above, doesn’t have a problem with knocking him to the ground. From the official synopsis, Jacob and Marlena do end up finding a lifelong love.
In related news, 20th Century Fox has decided to push back the release date of this movie by one week,so that it lands on Easter weekend. Now, the official release date will be April 22nd instead of the previous reported April 15th date.SOURCE
LA Times talks WATER FOR ELEPHANTS
Though Robert Pattinson has slowly begun to carve out his post-"Twilight" acting career, many critics still wonder whether the young star has the acting chops to successfully move past the world of vampires. While it wasn't a flop at the box office, Pattinson's latest non-"Twilight" film, "Remember Me," barely registered with filmgoers.
But next year, it seems the actor will finally have a real chance to show audiences what he's got: he'll star opposite Uma Thurman in "Bel Ami" and with Reese Witherspoon in April's "Water for Elephants," for which a trailer was released Thursday.
Based on a bestselling historical novel released in 2006, "Elephants" centers around a veterinary school student named Jacob (Pattinson) who falls for circus performer Marlena (Witherspoon). Despite their shared affinity for the big top, the pair and their burgeoning romance are threatened by Marlena's husband (Christoph Waltz).
MovieFone:- Robert Pattinson Joins a Traveling Circus
It's time to put away the werewolves, troublesome love scenarios and blunt-toothed vampirism and get our next taste of Robert Pattinson on the big screen. Instead of chasing girls many decades too young for him, he's joining a second-rate Depression Era circus and finding himself in a messy love triangle with two Academy Award winners -- Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz.
It's a bit of a surprising route to take for a new film. It's a full trailer showing more than a teaser ever would, yet the only actor to get much of a chance to shine in the scenes captured is the great Hal Holbrook, who plays the older version of Pattinson's character (though his name isn't cited beyond the quick and tiny credit screen at the end). For the rest, we see Waltz get angry, Witherspoon seem whistful and Pattinson stiff-faced. (Pattinson gets a lot of flack for his lack of facial expressions, something pretty surprising for a bright and upbeat person in real life. Someone give him a comedy, stat!)
'Water for Elephants' shares the life of a man named Jacob (Pattinson, Holbrook), who, when his parents died, dropped out of Cornel veterinary school amidst his final exams and joined a second-rate circus during the Great Depression. The trainer (Waltz) beats the animals and has a fiery temper, which isn't helped by the fact that Jacob falls for his wife (Witherspoon), also in the circus.
Does the trailer whet your appetite for the circus life? 'Water for Elephants' hits theaters on April 15th.
