Cannes 2012: OTR and Cosmopolis strong contenders and SWATH a possibility

Cannes is still a couple of months away so anything can happen, and much can change so this is our more level-headed, buyer-beware cautious entry into the world of speculation that tends to become engulfed in a lot of wishful thinking. All signs point to another strong festival, with a top tier list of filmmakers likely to make the journey.

Strong Contenders

“On The Road” (dir. Walter Salles)
Cast: Kristen Stewart, Garrett Hedlund, Tom Sturridge, Sam Riley, Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adams, Steve Buscemi, Terrence Howard
With production on the film beginning way back in August 2010, and additional photography happening last spring, it has been a slow but steady path for this highly anticipated, years in development adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s seminal novel. The director gave fans good news in January when he revealed that editing and mixing on the film was finally finished. And with a May 23rd release already set for France, the film’s appearance at Cannes feels like a fait accompli from our vantage point.

“Cosmopolis” (dir. David Cronenberg)
Cast: Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti, Jay Baruchel, Sarah Gadon
Before the end of the year, David Cronenberg told us that he was finishing the sound mix for the film, which means it’s nearing the finish line. Meanwhile, producer Gregoire Melin recently told Cineuropa he is “counting on” the film showing up on the Croisette. Additionally, “Cosmopolis” is a co-production between French and Canadian backers, so we presume we’re looking at Cannes premiere, followed by a TIFF bow before rolling into theaters this fall. Cronenberg is a regular at the festival but hasn’t been there in a decade since “Spider,” so we’re sure they’re going to want him back.

The possibilities

"Snow White And The Huntsman" (dir. Rupert Sanders)
Cast: Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth
Again, Cannes is no stranger to hosting blockbusters and the last two years have seen summer movies “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Robin Hood” unspool in the south of France. Will “Snow White And The Huntsman” fill that slot this year? With the film set to open on June 1st (just a few days after Cannes closes) the timing seems right, and a splashy premiere would be a nice final topping on what is already a steady publicity machine behind the pic.

David Cronenberg Talks About British Actors, Financing 'Cosmopolis' and Rob

Although David Cronenberg has built a career on films that explore the dark crevasses of the mind, he says he likes to have "good, productive fun" when he's working. "I have a very light set, and I don't screw with people's heads," he says. During a break from the set of his upcoming "Cosmopolis," Cronenberg stopped by Variety's offices to talk with Christy Grosz about the challenges of financing and why he'll probably never make a big-budget studio film.

You've worked with a lot of high-profile British actors like Jeremy Irons and Miranda Richardson. Is there a different sensibility that British actors bring that works well for you?
Part of casting that people rarely understand or need to understand but is a huge part of making independent films is what passport the actor has. If you're doing a co-production you're not doing a co-production with America because U.S. doesn't have any co-production treaties. It means that you cannot use American actors or, if you do, you are very limited. "A Dangerous Method," technically, does not have any American actors. Viggo has a Danish passport. ("Cosmopolis star") Rob Pattinson is a U.K. citizen. When you have Paul Giamatti in "Cosmopolis," he's the only American actor, even though it's an American story that takes place in New York. So these are things that you have to consider. Inevitably, for me, if you're doing an English-speaking role, you look at U.K. actors. It's true, of course, that they have a wonderful tradition of great acting, and they are actors who do stage and television and movies, which in the old days was unique to the U.K. In America, there was a real stigma attached to you if you were a TV actor. Guys like George Clooney struggled, I think, to finally get out of there, and whereas in the U.K. there was no stigma attached to doing a TV show. So very experienced actors who really understood the difference between theater acting and stage acting, movie acting weren't, quote, theatrical when they did movies. They knew how to do that, whereas when you're working with actors from other countries, they didn't know how to do that. Even some Canadian actors were very theater-oriented, and they couldn't do that sort of naturalistic American style of acting. So U.K. actors were very attractive, and the quality of the work was great, and so on. That's a lot of the reason. Often it was a Canada-U.K. co-production. Or if it's a Canada-France co-production, English actors can work because it's the European Union and that's the deal, so it doesn't have to be a French actor per se, it could be a U.K. actor. So that's one of the reasons that I work with a lot of English actors.

Financing is never easy for independent films. Do you find that getting someone like Mortensen attached early on helps drum up interest?
You have to find a cast that matches the tone of the movie and the budget level that you're going for. Everybody knows about studio movies where they say, well, we'll do this $200 million movie if you get Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt. It's at a different level, but it's still the same dynamic when you're doing an independent film. It's like, "Well, we'll buy the rights to France if you get someone like Rob Pattinson or Paul Giamatti or whatever." You can't really have your leads be unknown even in an independent film. You can sort of introduce unknowns. Sarah Gadon, for example, who plays Emma Jung (in "A Dangerous Method"). She's Canadian. She's my discovery. She has a nice big role with Rob in "Cosmopolis." So by the time we're doing "Cosmopolis," she's a real asset. Her star is rising. She's getting attention, and that's lovely to see. And eventually you'll be able to finance.

I would think somebody like Rob Pattinson could help, too.
The thing is, by himself, it's not enough. We have Juliette Binoche. We have Mathieu Amalric. We needed the French element to sell France. Paul Giamatti (was) very important to make the film attractive everywhere but also in North America. So one actor, even a great actor or famous actor is often not enough on his own still. That's the way it goes. That's the name of the game. So for me the balancing act is to juggle all of those things: the passports, the money, the fame and still get the right actors in the roles. It's an entertainment trick.

David Cronenberg Talks About Rob: "Paul was really impressed" + Cosmopolis Update

When the director walked the red carpet last week at the Gotham Independent Film Awards in support of his film "A Dangerous Method," he stopped to speak again with MTV News' Josh Horowitz, revealing which scenes in particular were the most challenging for Pattinson.

"Probably the last couple of days was where there was just a long, long, maybe 15-minute scene with Paul Giamatti, just the two of them in a couple of rooms," Cronenberg said. In "Cosmopolis," Pattinson plays Eric Packer, a young millionaire who just wants to get his hair cut. Things go awry when his limo gets stuck in traffic and a stalker, played by Giamatti, causes even more trouble.

Cronenberg said that one of the biggest testaments to Pattinson's skill as an actor was the effect he had on his Academy Award-nominated co-star. "They were both brilliant, and Paul was really impressed," he said. "If Paul's impressed, he's a good judge of other actors, and he said so publicly."

The director is simultaneously promoting "A Dangerous Method" and putting the finishing touches on "Cosmopolis." Cronenberg said that juggling both has never been an issue: "I've edited 'Cosmopolis,' and I'm about to go to Paris next week to do the sound mix of it, but I can switch over. It's like having two kids. When one kid comes through the door, you're there for that kid."

David Cronenberg talks about his motivation for casting Rob

Your casting of Robert Pattinson in 'Cosmopolis,' someone whose acting might not be as critically lauded as Mortensen's, was obviously a well-thought-out decision, then.
Well, Keira's acting doesn't always get praise from high-brow critics, either. I would use that parallel. You have a young actor who's found success with a franchise just like Keira did with 'Pirates of the Caribbean,' who's underrated because of that. In each case, they're too pretty and too successful so people are jealous. As a result, people assume that they can't possibly be good actors.

So what was the exact motivation for casting Pattinson in 'Cosmopolis'?
He's the right age, he's got the right screen presence, and when I looked at his other work I thought he'd be really interesting for the role. Casting is a black art – it's a bit mysterious how you come to these things – and it's subjective, too, of course. As a director, there are no rules to guide you. You have to go with your gut, ultimately.

David Cronenberg talks casting Rob, Twilight, fans and more with NY Mag

What was it about Robert Pattinson that made you think he was the right guy for the lead?
He's the right age. He looks right. He looks good in a suit. He looks like he could be a young, tough, billionaire. And I've actually thought he was quite a good actor who was very underrated in a similar way to Keira Knightley, I think, when I was thinking of her for Dangerous Method. Both of them have had great financial success and are stars based on franchises, but of course to do that you have to have a kind of screen charisma, you have to have a presence, which you can't buy or create; you either have it or you don't. That doesn't mean you're necessarily a good actor, though. But you have at least that. I looked at all the stuff that he's done, and I thought he's a really good actor. And then I spoke to him, and thought not only that, but he's a really smart actor. And he's funny, and he's very sweet. That’s when I tried to convince him to do the movie, which he was a little afraid of, just because I think he doesn't know how good he is, basically. And I think now that he's done the movie, he's starting to understand how good he is. Because he's terrific.

And was he a fan of your work?
He knew my work, yeah. What's interesting, too, about Rob is that he's very well educated in terms of movies and movie history and foreign films. On the set, he and Juliette Binoche were talking about the most obscure French films and stuff like that together. He really knows his stuff. And yet, as I say, he's a completely down-to-earth, sweet guy. Lovely to work with. And very funny.

Are you going to go see Breaking Dawn?
I think I'll wait for the screener.

You're not going to go with the screaming fans?
Well, I don't feel the need to line up, let's put it that way. And I'm sure there's going to be big lines for it. But, you know, basically I know what Rob can do having worked with him. I don't have to see Twilight now. I certainly looked at the first two, though, when I was thinking about him.

You did?
Oh yeah, sure. And I watched Remember Me, and I watched Little Ashes. Which is maybe a movie you don't know, but he plays a young Salvador Dalí in that movie with a Spanish accent. And I thought that was pretty interesting, very daring of him to do that, and it indicated to me that he was an interesting, serious actor.

And you were impressed with the work in the first two Twilights?
I was impressed with his screen presence and a lot of his stillness, and a lot of other things. But the other movies showed me he had range. He had the range that I wanted.

David Cronenberg talks Cosmopolis and Rob to The Playlist

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

David Cronenberg, who received a career tribute just in time to promote "A Dangerous Method," told The Playlist that he was skipping out on the rest of awards season so he could spend the time finishing "Cosmopolis."

"This isn't a criticism, but when you're making movies and being creative, you're not making movies to fit in awards season," he said. "It's a parallel universe, and sometimes those universes kind of intersect, but I'm going to run away and hide from all that. I'm going to Paris, and I won't be in the awards, I'll be happily in my new movie."

Cronenberg talks about why he wanted Rob for Cosmopolis

Cronenberg: Actors need to scare themselves. When I started to talk to [Robert Pattinson for "Cosmopolis"], it became apparent that he was terrified, as Keira was terrified to do Sabina, and that's always good.

Why did you want Pattinson for the part in "Cosmopolis"?
Cronenberg: Well I'd watched a movie that I think not too many people have seen called "Little Ashes," where he plays Salvador Dali, and he plays him as a young man and plays him with a Spanish accent. So I thought, well that's really interesting, I mean this was before he was a "Twilight" star, because, it takes a particular handsome young man to decide to play that role. And then I did watch some of the "Twilight" stuff and I watched "Remember Me" and I felt that he had a lot going on. He's supposed to be a super smart billionaire at a young age, 28 he says in the movie. It's intuition. I didn't know him as a person, but I'd figured from the movies that I'd seen, like "Little Ashes," that I could maybe interest him in doing something that's not "Twilight" obviously.

David Cronenberg Talks Some ore About Rob: "Robert's a very underestimated actor. I think he'll blow some people away."

David Cronenberg is still promoting "A Dangerous Method" and keeps talking about Rob and "Cosmopolis"

From The LA Times

R.K.: Your next film is “Cosmopolis,” which is adapted from a Don DeLillo novel. What can you tell me about it?

D.C.: It's the story of a young billionaire played by Rob Pattinson who travels across Manhattan to get a haircut. That's the plot. Robert's a very underestimated actor. I think he'll blow some people away.

From Living in Cinema

JT: In addition to budgetary reasons, do you prefer shooting in one or two takes for creative reasons as well?

DC: I did the same with A Dangerous Method and the same with my latest movie Cosmopolis. One or two takes…if you’re working properly with your actor and your actor is properly prepared, you don’t need more than that. The idea of doing ninety-nine takes like David Fincher is supposed to have done…it’s a completely different way of filmmaking.

JT: Cosmopolis is slated for next year, which is a return to screenwriting for you and features a stellar cast. What can you tell us about it, in particular Robert Pattinson, who seems a unique choice for a Cronenberg leading man?

DC: I think he’s kind of parallel to [Knightley] really. I think he’s a very underrated actor who’s really good. And so he proved to be. I think he’s fantastic in the movie… He’s really great. You can ask Paul Giamatti who’s said that publicly, because he does a big scene with him. Cosmopolis is based on a novel by Don DeLillo. It couldn’t be more different from A Dangerous Method, except that it to has a lot of dialogue. But it’s a very different kind of dialogue. You’ll have to wait and see.

David Cronenberg Talks About Rob with Movie Web

"I have no control over that, obviously. All I know is, as with Keira, I thought that Robert was very underrated. I mean, Keira has done more work than Robert has, but in England, they're always on her for whatever weird English class reasons. I'm not sure what that is. I always thought she was a substantial actress, and I had no doubt that she could really ace this role. I felt the same about Rob. The fate of the movie, though, who knows. I certainly think this. I don't think that any director who's looking to see what Rob can do, will not be able to see how terrific he is by looking at Cosmopolis. Even if the movie isn't a success at the box office, creatively, as far as I'm concerned, it is a success, and for Rob, it totally is. He's brilliant in the movie, he's fabulous. If nothing else, it will be a great demo film for Rob, for any other director who's looking for a great actor."

The filmmaker also talked about shooting both Cosmopolis and A Dangerous Method back-to-back.
"It was a wonderful shoot, as was A Dangerous Method, actually. They were both very beautiful shoots, even though they were both quite different in tone, which, for me, is delightful, because, to do two movies, back-to-back, they are both so different. The one similarity is that they're both very dialogue-heavy. That was kind of interesting, but they have very different dialogue."

David Cronenberg Talks Cosmopolis

New quote about Rob ;)

Director David Cronenberg discusses working with Robert Pattinson on Cosmopolis

I recently had the honor of speaking with director David Cronenberg, who was out promoting his new drama A Dangerous Method, which arrives in theaters November 23.

We also talked about his new thriller Cosmopolis, which hits theaters sometime next year and stars Robert Pattinson, Marion Cotillard, and Juliette Binoche. I asked him if Cosmopolis will be the movie that will separate Robert Pattinson from his Twilight past. Here's what the director had to say below.

David Cronenberg Talks About Rob and Fans: "He's fantastic in it"

Now wrapped, it should arrive next year, and when we spoke to the director on his press tour for "A Dangerous Method" in Los Angeles last week, we asked if the actor's fame had given him any pause in casting Pattinson.

To the contrary. "I kind of enjoy that," he told us with a smile. "Frankly, in a weird way, its almost in parallel with Keira [Knightley]. In England she’s got a lot of baggage. It’s not hers, it’s the journalist and the critics, who can be very nasty. I think, for me, you can’t ignore the baggage, but when you’re making the movie, it doesn’t exist. It’s not there. All you’re dealing with is the reality of this person as an actor. And I love that.”

Indeed, the director is fully aware that Pattinson's presence is likely to bring him a new audience, and he's pleased about the prospect. "The excitement around 'Cosmopolis' because of Rob was terrific. It was fun. The idea that these kids, that they really continue to be excited. I’ve said this about Viggo [Mortensen]. If you’re a fan of Aragorn in 'Lord of the Rings' then you don’t have to see 'Eastern Promises,' but if you’re a fan of Viggo as an actor you must see 'Eastern Promises.' And its the same with Rob. If they’re really Rob fans as opposed to Edward...whatever the name of the character is. Rob fans will want to see 'Cosmopolis.' "

And it sounds like fans will be pleased, and the doubters silenced, as the director couldn't be happier with his choice. "He's fantastic in it. They'll see him do things they've never seen him do, believe me. They'll be blown away," he said. "Cosmopolis" doesn't yet have a release date or distributor, but we'd put good money on a debut at Cannes or Toronto next year, before a fall 2012 release.

Grouchy Boy Talks About Cosmopolis and Mentions Rob

1)How it was to be directed by Cronenberg?
Working with Cronenberg was amazing, he is a Canadian Icon and a great filmaker! I felt like I was working with a member of my family. I was blessed to have worked with a genius!

2) Did you feel confortable playing Kosmo Thomas? You and your character have something in common?? Tell us about him?
I play a record producer and one of my artists played by real life rapper K’NAAN has died.I had to then break the bad news to our mutual friend Eric played by Robert PATTINSON. I can relate to Kosmo cause I was in the music buisness for many years.I started off as a rapper/producer and after I got the acting bug!!I felt comfortable playing Kosmo.

3) How it was to work with actors like Robert Pattinson, Paul Giamatti and Juliette Binoche?
I thought Robert Pattinson was a great to work with on set. I thought he handled himself like a pro! He would show up to work with a big smile and ready work.I think Robert will surprise a lot of people when this movie comes into theaters.
