Catherine Hardwicke talks about Rob and Kristen - 'They had a magnetism for each other'

You've said that Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were perfect for their roles. What did you see in them that made you cast them?

I thought Kristen was just amazing in Into the Wild. When I read the novel Twilight, I kept picturing her in that scene, where she’s sitting in the trailer, hoping to seduce Emile Hirsch. Her yearning was palpable, real, and intense. I thought, "This girl would be wonderful." So Summit flew me out to Pittsburgh, where she was shooting Adventureland. We took an actor with us and improvised a lot of scenes. To find Edward was tricky, because how he was written, he was perfect, with these cheekbones, and he was also wise beyond his years. We whittled it down from hundreds of actors to four. I'd only talked to Rob on the phone when he was much younger. He flew out on his own dime and stayed on his agent's couch. The four actors came over to my house and we workshopped all the "chemistry" scenes. With Rob and Kristen, it was apparent that those two just connected and had a magnetism for each other that was electric, right there on the spot.

Twilight Director Catherine Hardwicke Wants to work with Rob and Kristen again

Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has been hard at work promoting her new flick, Red Riding Hood, with Amanda Seyfried. But that doesn't mean she's forgotten past stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.

"I'd love to [work with them again], if the right project comes up at the right time, that would be awesome," Cath dished at the RRH premiere Monday.

"I think they're wonderful; they're super close to my heart."

She takes credit for getting them together, duh! Although she proceeded with caution at the time.

"I was exactly right there when they first met, so I saw it all from the beginning," Hardwicke told us years ago about Robsten's romance. "I saw that they both had that wonderful fascination with each other, and that's why I cast Rob."

Would you all like to see a Catherine, Rob, and Kristen reunion on screen? We would!

Catherine Hardwicke says she loves that Kristen "She's going to be a bad ass" and that "she's perfect for that"

Don't mess with Snow White.

Especially if Kristen Stewart is playing her...

As you may have heard, the Twilight starlet is in final negotiations to take on the fairest of them all role in Snow White and the Huntsman.

"I love it," Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke told us last night at the Hollywood premiere of her new flick, Red Riding Hood. "She's going to be a bad ass, learning how to hunt. That is perfect for Kristen!

"She's an athlete," Hardwicke continued. "She's a kick-ass chick. She's going to do good in that."

Know why?

Just last summer there were rumors that Pattinson and Stewart were going to star in Summit's adaptation of Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus.

While Kristen told us that was not true, she did say she would want to work with Rob in a non-sparkly vampire project.

"Yeah, we talk about it all the time," beamed K.Stew.

Obviously we want this to happen! But what should the family reunion be, exactly?

Catherine Hardwicke talks about casting Rob as Edward

Like the late John Hughes, who discovered the teenage actors who became the Brat Pack, Hardwicke has created many of this generation’s tween idols. Evan Rachel Wood (Thirteen), Emile Hirsch (Lords of Dogtown), Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner (Twilight) all got their big breaks in a Hardwicke film. She dishes about them like an older sister; how Hirsch was too lazy to do sit-ups and drew abs on his stomach with mascara or why Pattinson had to pluck his eyebrows. “They were a bit bushy,” she says. “We needed to see some eyes!”

For Twilight, Hardwicke had trouble finding an actor otherworldly enough to play vampire Edward Cullen. Then she got a call about a guy in London. “I looked at a couple pictures and was like, ‘I’m not sure,’?” Hardwicke says. “He had been fired from his last job, he was unemployed, he was in debt.” Pattinson flew to Los Angeles on his own dime to read with Stewart. “I have footage of their first meeting at my dining-room table,” Hardwicke says. “Kristen was like, ‘It’s got to be Rob!’ She felt connected to him from the first moment. “That electricity, or love at first sight, or whatever it is.” “You’ve got to realize that Kristen is 17 years old,” she told him. “She’s underage. You’ve got to focus, dude, or you’re going to be arrested. I made him swear on a stack of Bibles.” Hardwicke gave him the part, but he had to make a promise.

When Hardwicke auditioned Evan Rachel Wood for Thirteen, she had her get into her bed with Nikki Reed. That’s also where Pattinson kissed Stewart for the first time in his Twilight screen test. “That bed made Pattinson who he is right now,” says Reed. Asked about her lair, Hardwicke laughs. “MTV came and did an episode in my house filming the bed. It’s legendary,” she says, flashing a wide—dare we say wolfish—grin.

Catherine Hardwicke and Jackson Rathbone Flew to PA to Convince Kristen to be Bella!

Did you know Catherine flew to Kristen to talk her into Twilight? I didn't!!! According to Backstage.com, the Hardwicke flew to find her Bella.

Stewart was in Pittsburgh working on the indie film "Adventureland" when she first got wind of "Twilight." At the time, she says, she didn't really have "enough room in my head" to even consider aproject of that magnitude.

Still, she was up for the audition and
recalls being thrilled when director Catherine Hardwicke and actor
Jackson Rathbone flew to Pittsburgh to meet with her. "We worked
together for four hours," Stewart says. "

And by the end of it, we
didn't want to stop talking about it, and Catherine was like,
'Okay, well, I think you should do this. I'm gonna get on a plane
now, but hopefully we can continue this discussion later.' I was
like, 'Uh, does that mean…' I couldn't believe it."

Like Scott, Hardwicke was charmed by Stewart's brief "Into the
Wild" performance. "I felt her vulnerability and yearning leap off
the screen when she sat on that bed in the trailer, trying to
seduce Emile [Hirsch]," Hardwicke recalls. "Kristen has to feel
everything—to connect, to make it her own. She is intense and
powerful and athletically gifted. Bella Swan is clumsy. Kristen had
to be the most awkward volleyball player in 'Twilight,' but in
reality she's a superstar."
