Jake Abel and Max Irons Talk About Rob and Mention Twilight

Jake: “You see all these guys you are competing with, and suddenly you’re in a franchise that’s being compared to Twilight.”

Jake: “It’s more of a love box than a love triangle.”

Can you become the next Robert Pattinson?

Max: “It is a very lazy comparison, because Twilight was a phenomenon unto itself. Pattinson was chased down the streets of Paris before the films even came out. And he is doing well for himself. He has about five films with acclaimed directors lined up.

Jake: “A lot of people expect us to knock the Twilight cast. But Taylor Lautner is a really nice kid. Robert Pattinson, I couldn’t imagine the tremendous amount of pressure he was under — and he earned my respect when I saw him fight for certain projects. Water for Elephants is a great novel, the movie is what it was. That’s not his fault. That’s the risk; we’re the face of projects.”

  1. Sounds like both of them are not too happy being compared to Twilight. And Max Irons commenting using the phrase "lazy comparison" when asked whether they could be the next Robert Pattinson because Twilight was already a phenomenon is pretty lame. It almost seems like the success of the movies had very little to do with the cast who played the main characters. In my opinion, they are already looking for reasons just in case their movie will not do as well as Twilight. That's competition for you. Not impressed.

    1. I think you might be misinterpreting his "lazy" comment. I think he simply meant that just because he is staring in a similar type of movie as Rob, it doesn't necessarily mean that he should be compared to Rob, because Rob is in a league of his own. I'm pretty sure he meant it in a flattering way.

  3. So what is he saying? WFE was a good book but the movie was not so good? Lets wait for your movie to come out first before you start talking. Lets not get ahead of ourselves here. When people compare you to the Twilight phenomenal in anyway, say, "thank you so much, I'm truly flattered", and call it the day. The last person who made a smart ass remark was from beautiful creatures. Their weekend box office was 7 million. I'll say it again, you can only hope people remember you this time next year. Before anyone jump down my throat, read between the lines.
    1) Pattinson was chased down the streets of Paris before the films even came out (meaning it’s the idea of Edward, not necessarily Pattinson himself).
    2) Water for Elephants is a great novel, the movie is what it was. That’s not his fault. (plain English, the movie wasn't good)
Its not nice to give a person a compliment with one hand and then slap them with the other hand.
I loved remember me, and Cosmopolis was awesome. I also liked him the Bad Mother's Handbook where he played a geek. I look forward to his up coming projects and I know the sky will be the limit. The best is yet to come, and heaven help us all. As for Kristen, hold on the seats, its all I can say.

    2. Jake and Max are very intimidated with the success of Twilight and the beyond amazing stardom that the three leads were catapulted to. Both of them are finding it difficult to answer the interview questions without giving away what their true feelings are. They both know how difficult it will be for them to measure up to the Twilight cast and the success of the franchise.
I read the book but not really interested watching the movie in the big screen. Can't even think of Saoirse Ronan in a romantic scene.....She may be considered a good actress but in what I have seen in her movies, she's not exactly what I would consider for a female lead in a romance movie. Sorry....just saying.

I prefer to save judgement since I wasnt there, I didn't speak to the guys, I didn't hear the tone of their voices, I flat out didn't ask them elaborate what they thought of Rob, and how the really feel about being compared to Twilight and elaborate. That im sure would be a whole different story then the one brewing in the comment section.

Just from this one tiny interview I see that both of them lack one of the key ingredients that make Robert Pattinson who he is, the one thing that keep us supporting him no matter what; he is HUMBLE. He makes you feel like he is like you, with flaws, down to earth and so on. These two are sitting up on a high horse.

    1. Jake Able I'm not familiar with, however Max Irons(son of Jeremy Irons) was In Red Riding Hood with Amanday Seyfried. That moving tanked faster than the Titanic in the spring of 2011. I thought it was okay, but not great. As for the film adaptation of WFE,I loved it despite toning it down to a PG-13 rating. I guess some of the up and coming actors do not want to be compared with a series as successful as Twilight, because that level of success can not be duplicated at this time. Perhaps another franchise will come along to rival it,but for now nothing comes close.

My friend was working at Barnes & Noble when it came out. She said they had more complaints about that book than any other. I was not the only one to buy based on the Steph Meyers name.

  13. The fact is, any up and coming potential hearthrob in a YA movie, especially a super natural based franchise, is going to be compared to Robert and Twilight. But the fact that these guys are in The Host which is a Stephenie Meyer creation, they're going to get it double time. I'm sure they might get annoyed by it, but they really shouldn't bite the hand that feeds them. They should pray that they get Twilight fans on board with them and their movie, because they're the only ones who would be interested at all. Jeremy already got it when he was in Catherine Hardwick's Red Riding hood, but that Jake dude really needs to figure it all out and watch what he says.

    ReplyDelete
  14. They get it wrong all the time. This one or that one will be the next Robert Pattinson. They all lack something so relevant, what makes Rob is lovable that we become devoted fans. The man is HUMBLE. And he is not faking it. He is just humble. We makes you feel like he is just like you, with flaws, real, and simple. He never wanted to be on that high horse, and with all that fame and money, he never once climbed on that horse. These two, before their movie even hits theaters, they are already on that high horse. Not cool dudes. Now I won't be taking my daughter to see that film. Sorry Stephanie. Better keep your boys in check if you want to see some profits here.

  18. god, can ppl just stop talking about twilight? i don't like how every ya franchise is compared to twilight and i don't like how every actor from (insert franchise) seems like they want to distance themselves from the twilight comparisons. twilight kind of pioneered this whole teen franchise trend, so imo, ppl should have a little more respect for it. especially from an actor's perspective. twilight really discovered uncharted territory and created this current model for young actors to break through in this business and acquire access as an actor. as much as they dont want to be associated with twilight, everyone's looking for their "twilight" to give them their big break and superstardom, so i don't really like how they seek out these opportunities and then proceed to discredit the franchise that brought on this new wave of book adaption franchises. i feel like even if twilight had never happened, the hunger games or some other series would have come along anyway, but without it i don't think these new series would have had such a seamless transition/introduction in terms of marketing, how to present the new actors, etc. they're presumptuous to think they're in a position to judge the actors of twilight bc they're getting it soo much easier. twilight/kristen/rob paved the path, now you're just walking on it. for that alone they should be gracious. (or idk maybe they wanted that overnight superstardom that was thrust on rob/kristen or unlike rob/kristen they're just using their franchise as a vehicle whereas rob and kristen really cared about twilight. i feel like that's why you never hear kristen say anything even mildly bad EVER about any other franchise bc she isn't bothered by the criticisms twilight receives. she doesn't need to defend it to anyone or feel embarassed about it. she wanted to be a part of the story and it wasn't a calculated career move for her. i really admire her for that.)

sorry, i know this comment is really long and pretty OT, but it's been my pov for a while and i guess the accumulation of comments from diff actors (girl from beautiful creatures:"ours is humourous and has wit" "i couldn't have taken it seriously otherwise" HG cast:"our story isn't aboiut the love triangle" our female heroine is strong") who have every right to differentiate their story from twilight or any other story isn't what bothers me, it's that through this, they seem to (whether intentionally or not) demean the storyline/characters of twilight. my point: show a little humility towards the franchise that opened up this whole new market, instead of condescending to it and acting above it.

the only actor i've seen be gracious and complimentary and mature about the comparisons is theresa palmer. she's always saying lovely things about kristen and it shows you can be mature and don't have to be so self conscious about the comparisons. bc really what that's about is insecurity and ego.

  19. what about comparisons to twilight?
that franchise was really successful, i hope ours does just as well. that would be amazing. (no elaboration needed. they didn't ask for your critique on the movie)

are you the next robert pattinson / kristen stewart?
i think they've both handled the fame from twilight with groundedness and a level head, always giving credit to the appeal of the characters rather than themselves. they both seem really humble and i think they're both using the twilight fame to make a name for themselves outside of the franchise, rather than just be complacent. they're working on great projects and challenging themselves. i think all actors are grateful to land such opportune roles and i hope i'm able to create a name for myself through this series and afterwards.

DONE. THE END. see... it's not so hard.

    1. Agree- I read the book The Host when it first came out and was disappointed-It did not have the same compassion as Twilight. I read the Twilight books before the movie that's when I first feel in love with Twilight. I read Water for Elephants and the movie is nothing like the book. The book was a lot darker than the movie-didn't feel the chemistry between Rob and Reese.

Beautiful creatures was a huge flop!!! They tried to rip off twilight. It didn't wk wanna know why? Duh u don't have the couple with the mind blowing chemistry in it! Robsten is the key to success. Nobody else can recreate that angst like they do. Twilight can't be duplicated hollywood stop trying.....

And these actors that don't show respect to rob and kristen should be replaced. If not for rob and kristen they would not have jobs right now!

  23. Drama queens! The didn't say anything bad about Rob, they actually praised him. They said Rob was a risk taker, is working with acclaimed directors, and have respect for him. So what if Jake didn't like WFE. No wonder people feel they can't have an honest (not mean) opinions about Twilight or its actors. Fans go on the attack. And the "lazy comparison" was a jab at the reporters or journalists not doing their homework and asking stupid questions. Jake and Max know BC is nowhere near the level of twilight. This fandom deserves an Oscar I swear it does.

    2. That's fine, but there's a line fans cross a lot. You guys need to stop and think. Why would the lady or ladies who run this site post a passage of an interview "dissing" Rob on a positive robsten site? Because they weren't dissing him.

      Delete
    3. Anon 1:15. They posted an article that mentioned Rob. Stop and think? That's just it. We can read, analyze, and express ourselves. On every site, fans are outraged because we know the difference between a compliment and an insult. I suggest you read that interview again. There is nothing complimentary about what they are saying. In case you missed it, let me break it down for you.

1.) The "lazy comparison". First of, Catherine Hardwick deserves all the credit in the world because if the first movie was garbage, we won't be having this conversation right now. The director brings the writer's vision to life. Her style, from song choices, shooting style, casting choices and so on made Twilight a success. The actors did their homework and worked hard. He is implying that it was going to be a success regardless (bullshit)

      2) The book (WFE)was great but the movie wasn't. We is saying Rob did't do a good job (sneaky to say but it wasn't his fault).

      3) The new trend these days, young actors trying so hard to distance themselves from Twilight as though it is crap (they wish).

Like I said before, I know a snob when I see it. These guys were dissing Rob and Twilight. Plain and simple, and I won't be civilized about it. Thanks

      Delete
    4. I think you are looking to see faults. This cast is not being respected because what people generally think of twilight.

      1) Twilight was going to be successful anyways because of the story. It was the story that was passed around to read. People didn't read Twilight at especially at the beginning for its actors. Didn't matter who played who as long the as the leads had great chemistry and keep it true to the characters, twilight fans would watch and keep watching it. There was even a petition to get rid of Rob as Edward. Just because Max said Twilight was a phenomenon unto itself I'm not going to automatically assume he meant to say the director, cast and everyone didn't work hard.

2)I think Rob is a really good actor but I didn't like Remember Me. That doesn't mean I think he's bad actor. There's a difference there. Some people like some movies some dont. End of story, nothing sneaky about it.

      3) Love the saga or not, Twilight is not very well thought of. And the cast is sick of the Twilight questions. Because they have the same author, the host is not being taken seriously by interviewers. I'm not saying its right, but that's what's going on. Twilight gets a lot of irrational hate and mockery, the cast from the host don't want the same thing to happen to them. A movie they worked hard on too.

I won't pretend to know a snob. I don't like it when people pretend to know Kristen is a snob and talk crap about her. So I wont talk crap about these guys that I don't know over an article that someone else wrote. That's just the way I am.

    5. I will make this short as I am on the train to work and hate typing on my iPhone with tiny keys. To assume Twightlight would have been a success because the books were, you are so mistaken. So many great books try to make it to the big screen but the outcome wasn't so good. A great director with great vision, great chemistry between actors is what makes this worked. If the first half of fans who read the book went to see the movie and it was bad, do you think they will go see it again or tell friends to go see it because all though the movie sucked, the book was good? Catherine's style blew audience away, from the way the vampires enter the cafeteria for the first time, the first kiss, the baseball game, the dinner with the Cullen's, the prom, the way these scenes were played out, that's the director's vision. Catching the apple, all her vision. As for calling them snobs, I call it as I see it.

      Delete
    6. No, I never said that that successful books equal great movies. Twilight has a unique fanbase. Its on a different level than most successful books. To me that credit goes to Meyer. Its a testament to the story she created. That made sure fans would go see the movie. Catherine gets credit for putting it on the big screen with amazing music and with talented and dedicated actors. I personaly think the movie was good but not great. I was asked if I liked Twilight when the movie was over andI felt my hesitation to say I loved it and my friend did as well. But it was still good enough to keep me watching. I'm not going to lie and say I loved it to go with the crowd. You like the baseball scene I didn't. It made me cringe. I didn't like the revealing/meadow scene either.

And the snobs, call it as I see it thing people say that about Kristen as well. And they couldn't be for more wrong, just a thought.

All I'm saying is that fans should be to take and respect opinions and Im not talking about mean spirited ones. I mean if someone doesn't like Twilight, a Rob movie, or even his acting. It's ok its just a personal preference, no needs to go on the attack and become
      uncivilized.

      Delete
    7. I agree with you that we must respect opinions even if they differ from ours but that is not the issue here. To me, what I find appalling is their comment that Twilight the movie would be successful regardless, because Twilight the book is aready a phenomenon. This comment disregards all the other aspects for the success of the movie - a visionary director, the brilliant and intuitive casting, the passion and hard work of the cast and crew, and lastly, the amazing on screen chemistry of Kristen and Rob.

I understand their compulsion to distance themselves from Twilight because Twilight has set a very bar that is hard to be compared to. It would have been nice if they were more gracious and not competive in their responses. This would show that they want potential viewers to judge their movie and their performance on its own merits.
We'll see what happens in a few weeks....Hope this type of answers are not a repeated by the actors and the cast of The Host.

    8. Maybe he did that or maybe he didn't. I'm sure well at least believe they respect Twilight and its workers since they are working in a Meyer story. I think its all these journalist that keep poking at them for drama. I saw one interview where the interviewer said the host was the same story as Twilight. Ronan was quick to correct that and you can see that it bothered her. They are dealing with some of the backlash that Twiligh has bc Twilight to the interviwers is beneath them. They didn't even care to do some research. The host cast are humans they can get irritated too and not always have perfect answers to please
everyone. Given how they are being treated I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt.

    9. I really think that they need their PR Staff to prepare them for interviews and maybe even sctipt their responses to questions comparing them to Twilight and Stephenie should initiate this. These are touchy and sensitive questions and there are a lot of bases to cover. Just saying....

    1. Anon 11:57. They know how to answer a question. A baby could answer this. This is not a difficult question. If the question was "how do feel about being called the next de Niro........(case in point. These people believe they are talking to Twilight fans, what they consider (in their heads) a bunch of silly teenage girls, So they can pretty much say whatever and it will just slip by, why, Rob's fans are just crazy teenage girls. And that my friend, is the biggest misconception of this whole Twilight business. I love the movies, I love the actors (like a big sister, a mom). They gave me back my teenage years. They brought back what I had forgotten. I am in my forties, a working adult, with a great career, a family of my own. This is where they are so wrong, to think to know why Twilight is so huge.

  26. A big part of the huge success of Twilight is how Stephenie created the Bella character as someone that women and girls across the world can relate to and see themselves as. And thr magic of first love and how both Bella and Edward survived all odds to protect that love inspite of everything that could have easily separated them. This is what Kristen and Rob gave us that kept us coming back until their story was completely told. The HOST is not a story that is relatable and does not tug at your heartstrings no mattet how well it is filmed and acted.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm back just for a sneak peak and it is crazy over here.
We all have our likes and dislikes.
I like The Host and I'm super excited to see the film.
Some of you apparently aren't. That is ok.
I read this article about a week ago. And I thought what these two actors said about Rob was nice and I liked it.

For those of you who aren't in the Host fandom it is a little iffy because there are fans from Twilight lovers to non-alike.

Many people who liked this book recognize this is different from Twilight an even Stephenie Meyer herself in all her recent interviews it trying have people separate Twilight from this story since it’s so different, and has a different message. The Host is not as romantic as Twilight so it will have different feel that some may or may not like.

Jake/Max know and respect Rob. He wasn't try to dis-him by saying it’s a "lazy" comparison. He meant to say people are just comparing him to Rob on the sole connection of SM. He knows and stated that Rob is "in a league of his" and that he can't possibly reach the crazy fandom that Rob has been growing since 2008.
When he said lazy it means they reporter/journalist is not doing enough research to realize that it is not fair nor reasonable to compare them to Rob because of the high expectations they know they can't reach.

The makers/SM/actors of the Host have said countless times, they don't expect this to be the new Twilight. They just want to bring a new take on a story to the screen for people to enjoy and be entertained. That is it.

So please everyone get off your high-horse. How about you talk about how much this "will suck" after you watch the movie objectively. Take out your preconceived notions and expectations of some epic love story since it is not an epic love story.
